General Summary

The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Young Adult Librarian for Jefferson Madison Regional Librarywho are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $20.03 Hourly and $41,662.40 Annually. This position provides responsible professional services to young adults at the Gordon Avenue Library. Work is performed under the limited supervision of Young Adult Manager or Branch Manager.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Plans, organizes, publicizes, and conducts library programs for young adults. Operates within the allocated budget, maintains calendar of programs, and utilizes outside presenters when applicable.
  • Conducts and evaluates programs using a variety of techniques, resources, and activities, and recording statistics.
  • Supervises and monitors the work of teen volunteers.
  • Maintains and evaluates Young Adult Collection, including selecting and weeding.
  • Promotes young adult services to the community.
  • Provides circulation, reader's advisory and reference services to patrons of all ages.
  • Conducts reference interviews in order to interpret questions and identify the appropriate response to answer informational readers advisory questions including preparing teacher loans and patron subject requests as assigned.
  • May be expected to work at a public service desk providing reference and information assistance for all ages.
  • Designs creative and helpful displays, including books, bookmarks, information and seasonal materials, bulletin boards and room wide decorations.
  • Provides outreach in schools and other community organizations and organizes tours and group visits to the library.
  • May occasionally serve as acting department/assistant branch manager.
  • Flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
  • Eligibility for professional certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia within the first 2 years of employment; AND a knowledge of young adult literature and general reference sources.

OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred:
  • Experience working with young adults.
  • Familiarity with STEM programming.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Job Knowledge:
  • General knowledge of library practices.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement library policies and procedures associated with public services such as the Internet, meeting rooms, displays, food and cell phone, etc.
  • Knowledge of circulation computer hardware and other technology associated with circulation of library materials and the ability to troubleshoot.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware/software applications to prepare attractive and accurate book lists, flyers, and signs.
  • Familiarity with automated systems and electronic resources including databases, the Internet, and social media.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use library's print and electronic resources.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, technical journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Intermediate: Ability to organize data and write clear and concise reports, business letters, explanations, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math:
  • Intermediate: ability to deal with number systems; simple formulas, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.
Communication Skills:
  • Intermediate: Provide and receive complex information. May include interactions that involve stressful, negative situations requiring significant tact and the ability to diffuse aggressive behavior and reach consensus. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and understanding. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with JMRL staff, leaders, and the public.   • Requires Limited Direction: Normally completes work according to their own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance occasionally. Manages special projects with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.

  • Skilled: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.

3. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.
  • Pension:
    • Choose from two options:
      • A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
      • A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
