ATTENTION:
The Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor (FA040) in the area of Sculpture beginning August, 2025.
JOB DETAILS:
This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position with teaching responsibilities for undergraduate courses within the Department of Art and Design. The instructional assignment includes 3D-Design (Foundations), all levels of Sculpture (I, II, III, IV & V), and a general education lecture course, World of the Arts (WOTA).
The Sculpture lab/studio was recently upgraded with a multimillion-dollar renovation. We seek candidates from a variety of perspectives who will take an active interest in progressing the Sculpture program through the integration of digital processes and technologies, such as 3D printing and laser cutting/etching, CNC milling, etc., as well as traditional practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Sculpture or Studio Art with a focus in Sculpture is required. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2025; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2026 in advance of their first scheduled review.
- Candidates should have experience operating and managing a Sculpture studio/classroom, including a metal fabrication area, digital design lab, foundry, and a general work area.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous university-level teaching experience in all levels of Sculpture and a sustained record of professional research activity.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training drills.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching:
- The successful candidate must teach full-time (3:3 teaching load). Semester course rotation will vary based on department and program needs, with possible teaching assignments in Three-Dimensional Design, all levels of undergraduate Sculpture, and a WOTA course.
- Faculty members are expected to serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage and support students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities.
Research:
- This position will be expected to pursue an active creative research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications or exhibitions, and contributes to advancing the department, university, and the profession.
Service:
- This position will be expected to participate in activities that support the function of the department, college, university, and community relevant to the one's expertise and interests.
Additional Duties:
- Maintenance and operation of specialized equipment and tools, including a non-ferrous induction foundry furnace, a gas melt-out kiln, a CNC machine, MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-acetylene welders, 3-D printers, and a Wazer water jet etcher/cutter.
- Budgeting and ordering supplies.
- Overseeing materials and inventory.
- Maintaining a high standard for safety, cleanliness, and organization in these spaces.
- Management of student workers/studio assistants.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $53,000. UW System employees receive an excellent benefit package.
