The Department of Theory and History of Art and Design (THAD) at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) invites applications for part-time faculty members to teach in the spring semester, 2025. Applications for fall 2025 will also be considered.

RISD recognizes principles of social equity, inclusion, and diversity as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing attention to difference and expansion of the forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and learning environments.

THAD seeks art historians to teach required and elective courses to RISD undergraduate students. Opportunities include teaching sections of THAD’s first-year introductory courses (H101: Global Modernisms and H102: Critical Introduction to the History of Architecture and Design), and teaching elective lectures and seminars on topics in the candidate’s area of expertise. The department is especially interested in adding electives in the following areas: history of drawing, history of animation, ancient and early modern South Asian art and design, early modern art and design of Europe, contemporary design (especially digital design).

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or ABD in the history of art or an allied field. Applicants with a master’s degree only will be considered for H101/102 teaching.
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, with a clear ability to teach a diverse student body and employ inclusive pedagogies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of successful teaching
  • Experience teaching students of art and design
