The School of Film and Animation (SOFA) in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology is accepting applications for a non-tenure track Lecturer position in film production to teach undergraduate courses. The successful applicant will have expertise in all aspects of foundational film production, directing the actor, plus at least two of the following: fiction film production, experimental film production, film studies, business and careers in film, producing, and editing.

In SOFA’s BFA in Film and Animation, faculty contribute a range of professional interests and expertise in a studio setting. Join a vibrant faculty team engaged in filmmaking and film study across the spectrum. Individuals with university teaching experience in film production are encouraged to apply. Experience teaching film studies is a plus.

Responsibilities include:

1. Teaching in foundational, technical, and production courses
2. Career advising and mentoring students
3. Working with the School of Film and Animation faculty on program and curricular development
4. Maintaining a high level of expertise in current technologies, trends, methodologies, and software developments in the professional community, as they relate to the current curriculum
5. Participating in college and school service

Department/College Description

THE SCHOOL: The internationally recognized School of Film and Animation (SOFA) offers BFA and MFA degrees in film production with emphasis in either Animation or Live-Action, as well as a BS degree in Motion Picture Science. Students work with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including a 7,000 square foot stage, sound mixing theatre, digital color correction suite, and 4K laser projection Atmos theatre. SOFA provides a creative community where students have the opportunity to discover their unique talents and expressive potential, while at the same time developing the skills needed to fulfill any creative or technical role in the film and animation industry.

SOFA enrollment is 380+ undergraduate and 50 graduate students. Within six months of graduating, 85% of our undergraduate students were fully employed or within a graduate program.

THE COLLEGE: RIT’s College of Art and Design is the university’s creative hub where art, design, science, and technology intersect in our 200,000+ sq. ft. facility. We are a dynamic and professional arts and design community comprised of nearly 2,000 students (UG and Grad), 140 full-time faculty, 60 creative staff, and a number of professional part-time faculty, all of whom contribute to our College’s ecosystem. The College’s four schools offer programs in Art, Design, Crafts, Film and Animation, Photography and Photographic Sciences. The range of innovative programs offers students a panoramic perspective from creating fine art using centuries-old methods to pushing the boundaries of digital creativity.

Required Minimum Qualifications

1. MFA degree or equivalent terminal degree. In certain circumstances, candidates with a bachelor degree and skill qualifications, and exceptional professional and creative experience in a production-related field will also be considered.
2. Artistic achievement as a filmmaker
3. Capacity to teach basic film production, and directing the actor
4. Expertise in at least two of the following areas: fiction film production, experimental film production, film studies, business and careers in film, producing, and editing
5. Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the College’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
