Summary: Teaches a full course load in Music, including courses in the core music sequence, and directs a vocal or instrumental ensemble. Teaches general education courses and performance-related subjects, as needed, to enrich the liberal arts music curriculum. Additional duties include advising students, on-going professional development, serving on campus-wide committees, contributing in and modeling scholarship, assessment of academic programs, supporting Principia activities, and promoting Christian Science-based character education in accord with Principia’s mission as outlined in Education at The Principia.

Work Performed – Essential Duties:
- Teaches 18-21 SH per year of undergraduate music courses per academic year
- Is an active character educator in accordance with Principia’s mission
- Supports metaphysically the mission and goals of the institution and its operations
- Maintains office hours
- Meets with students for academic advising, conferences, and academic support
- Works actively with others in performing the general business and decision making of the department and academic division
- Assists in departmental work, including assessment, program review, and development of curriculum
- Teaches courses within the context of Principia's philosophy of liberal arts education
- Teaches a variety of core required Music and ensemble courses, as needed
- Teaches additional undergraduate general education music courses as needed
- Teaches additional undergraduate elective courses in areas as determined by candidate’s experience
- Supports student capstones and undergraduate performance in areas of expertise
- Supports the Music Department by participating in scheduled department events such as recitals, concerts, admissions weekends, etc.
- Collaborates with colleagues, department chair, and division head regarding curriculum, including class scheduling and department offerings
Additional Duties:
- Serves on academic committees
- Supports general education, Freshman Year Experience, and writing program expectations
- Works closely with students to further develop their thinking, writing, research, and communication skills
- Teaches applied music lessons as determined by candidate’s experience (composition, instrumental or vocal)
- Actively engages in professional development, research in appropriate scholarly field, and/or performance in order to contribute to a vibrant Music faculty
- Engages in regular departmental work including assessment, program review, and development of curriculum
- Willingness to serve in leadership roles such as department chair
To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
- Master of Music (MM) required, Doctorate in Music (DMA) preferred. May consider doctorate and master’s degree in related field.
- Willingness to be an academic generalist able to train in and teach in multiple areas, as needed, within the music discipline and in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Classroom teaching experience and/or work with college-aged students preferred
- Ability to work successfully with a range of student musical skill levels and academic abilities within the scope of Principia’s BA in Music or Music Studies liberal arts program
- Ability to inspire and sustain student interest in both introductory and advanced coursework
- Piano proficiency and/or performance experience preferred
