Job Summary
The Director of Worship Music for Sundays and Special Services is responsible for the implementation of music ministry for the weekly Sunday service (9:00 am), the monthly late service (10:45 am Sept - May) and special services from September through May, with an emphasis on traditional music style. The Director provides guidance in the development and implementation of high-quality worship in collaboration with organists, pianists, other instrumentalists, and vocalists in groups or as individuals. This includes directing the two currently established choirs: a small vocal choir and a handbell choir. The Director holds a spirit of collaboration with other members of the Worship staff at Our Lord's Lutheran Church. This position is for an annual nine-month period from September through May.
- Duties
Be committed to the Mission, Vision, and worship philosophy of Our Lord’s Lutheran Church, ELCA.
- Work together with the pastor, organists, keyboard musicians, and other instrumentalists on the selections of hymns and special music.
- Integrate updated musical styles and worship methods to Sunday traditional service music.
- Organize choirs and hold weekly rehearsals with the adult Vocal Choir and with the Handbell Choir.
- Prepare the Vocal Choir for singing at worship services on two Sundays per month and also for special services.
- Prepare the Handbell Choir to perform at worship services on one Sunday per month and also for special services.
- Recruit new members for each choir as able from members of the church and local network of musical contacts.
- Provide guidance to Vocal and Handbell Choir members on performance issues.
- Serve as a soloist and cantor as needed.
- Prepare a yearly budget for music purchase, instrumental upkeep, tuning, and repair.
- Be aware of organists’ and pianists’ service playing schedule.
- Hire musicians as needed to enhance worship, such as additional singers for Sunday, substitute keyboard musicians, or others as needed.
- Maintain the Vocal and Handbell Choir music library.
- Collaborate with technical staff on musical program needs.
The Director will have full use of the church facilities and grounds to teach private music lessons, group lessons and the like at no cost to the Director. Use of the office provided and spaces for teaching continues throughout the summer months of June, July, and August during which this Director does not receive financial payment for, or perform, the duties listed above.
Qualifications:
- Strong leadership skills to effectively lead a music department
- Ability to mentor and guide musicians to achieve high performance standards
- Excellent communication skills to interact with musicians and staff members effectively
- Proficient knowledge of musical techniques and styles
- Previous experience in conducting musical performances is required.
Compensation based upon training and experience.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $15,000.00 - $17,500.00 per year
Expected hours: 12 – 17 per week
