The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation to support complex software and systems engineering programs. This role works closely with program managers, engineers, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure technical information is clearly communicated and accessible to diverse audiences, including customers, end-users, and internal teams. The Senior Technical Writer will drive the documentation process for Agile programs, ensuring timely delivery of materials that align with program milestones and requirements.
Required Basic Qualifications and Skills Requirements:
- Develop, edit, and maintain technical documents, including user manuals, installation guides, software release notes, system specifications, and training materials, TO Manuals.
- Collaborate with engineering, development, and project management teams to gather and verify technical information.
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accurate documentation tailored for various audiences.
- Manage and update documentation in Agile environments, ensuring materials remain current and relevant throughout the program lifecycle.
- Work within established content management systems (CMS) or documentation repositories to organize and publish materials.
- Support proposal development efforts by creating compliant, persuasive, and professionally formatted proposal sections.
- Maintain consistency in tone, style, and formatting of all technical documentation in accordance with company and program standards.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews of documentation to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
- Provide expertise in writing for compliance with government standards, such as MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-40051, or other applicable guidelines.
- Lead documentation efforts for program reviews, including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Test Readiness Reviews (TRR).
- Facilitate content reviews with stakeholders and incorporate feedback to finalize documents.
- Mentor junior technical writers and contribute to the development of best practices for technical documentation processes.
- Track and report progress of documentation deliverables against program schedules and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills Requirements:
- Security Clearance: Active DoD Secret clearance required; Top Secret/SCI eligibility is preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in technical writing, communications, English, or a related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Experience:
- Minimum 8 years of technical writing experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or lead role.
- Demonstrated success in creating documentation for complex software, systems engineering, or technology programs.
- Experience working in Agile software development or DevSecOps environments.
- Proficiency with documentation tools such as Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, MadCap Flare, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and collaborative tools like Confluence, SharePoint, or JIRA.
- Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt content for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality deliverables.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams in fast-paced environments.
- Solid understanding of industry standards for technical documentation and software usability.
Desired Skills:
- Mastery of technical communication tools, such as Adobe FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, Microsoft Word, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency with content management systems (CMS) like Confluence, SharePoint, or JIRA.
- Advanced knowledge of structured authoring methodologies, including XML/DITA.
- Familiarity with Agile software development and DevSecOps processes.
- Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, developers, and program managers.
- Experience in developing and implementing style guides and documentation standards.
- Knowledge of government and industry documentation standards such as MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-40051, or ISO/IEC standards.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy and consistency in technical documentation.
- Solid understanding of usability principles, user-centered design, and technical writing best practices.
- Strong project management and multitasking skills to manage multiple documentation deliverables simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and mentoring abilities for supporting junior writers and team members.
- Effective time management skills to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Proposed Pay Scale: $125,400-$155,300
