General Description

Performs technical work with engineering and surveying procedures, methods, techniques, and computer-aided design and drafting (AutoCAD) software applications.
Essential Job Functions

  • Creates, updates and maintains AutoCAD standards and procedures.
  • Assists in preliminary layout of complex assignments to define appropriate drawings and information.
  • Assists survey and engineering staff in preparing legal descriptions for easements.
  • Utilizes raw field data, field notes, sketches, previous surveys, descriptions and other supporting documents in preparing surveys.
  • Prepares final as-built drawings from survey information collected by our survey or construction inspection team.
  • Works to ensure projects are completed as specified, within established timeframes, and in accordance with approved project plans.
  • Interprets legal descriptions/instruments, and technical plans/drawings to determine boundaries, assets, and facilities for georeferencing.
  • Participates in engineering studies, investigations, and surveys relating to construction projects.
  • Produces detailed design drawings, layouts, sketches, marked up prints, maps, and graphic representation of engineering designs using computer-aided drafting software.
  • Prioritizes drafting projects and provides drafting assistance/training to co-workers.
  • Assists in quantity take-offs and cost estimates during design phases.
  • Develops and maintains construction details as need by engineering and survey staff.
  • May assist with additional tasks to include supporting field assignments, construction oversight, support to project manager, County Surveyor, or Construction Inspector with project coordination.
  • Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to our mission, vision, values and goals and represent the County in a professional, dignified manner at all times both in actions and appearance.
  • May have a role in the County's disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during and/or after an emergency.
  • Must be able to meet minimum attendance standards.
  • Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL, VISUAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The physical requirements are that of sedentary work and include exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required occasionally. Requires repetitive motion of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Requires fingering to include picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Required to operate a motor vehicle to conduct site inspections.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures. Transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Requires the expression or exchange of ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Requires perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The working environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions and is nearly absent of potentially disagreeable elements, such as irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors, dust, etc. The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of basic trigonometry; terminology, methods, practices and techniques of engineering design and computer aided design/drafting; methods, materials, practices and techniques of bridge, road, street and other public works construction projects; surveying practices and techniques, including use and adjustments of modern surveying equipment.

Required to operate a personal computer, calculator and computer aided design/drafting software.

Required to perform field measurements, tests and engineering and surveying computations; apply engineering principles and practices; express ideas effectively both orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain working relationship with contractors, employees and public.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications

Associate's degree in Civil Drafting, Engineering Technology or closely related field; supplemented by three (3) years of computer aided drafting experience in civil engineering related projects; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be computer literate. Experience with Civil 3D is required.

LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Requires a valid driver license at the date of hire and maintain said license while employed in this position.

ANNUAL LEAVE:
0-4 years - Employee is eligible to earn up to 104 hours per year. (4 hours per pay period)
