Position Summary:

The School of Music in the College of Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Northern Colorado invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music History to begin in August 2025.

The University of Northern Colorado School of Music (SOM) is searching for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music History who is committed to exploring an expanding definition of music as an academic discipline. Specific responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in music history and possibly additional areas within the School of Music based on a candidate's strengths, qualifications, and interests. Other primary responsibilities will include developing a reputable scholarship agenda commensurate with a tenure-track position, and chairing and/or serving on doctoral dissertation and master's thesis committees in a variety of musical disciplines. Potential additional assignments will depend on interest, experience, and program needs. SOM is especially interested in candidates whose personal and professional experience, teaching, and creative activity will contribute to the advancement of equity, diversity, and cultural wealth at the School and College's level.

Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:

Terminal degree in musicology or related field (Performance, Education, or Composition) with a demonstrated specialty in music history or musicology at the time of anticipated hiring (August 2025).

2 years of teaching music history and related coursework at the college level as instructor of records.

Evidence of achievement or potential for achieving a national profile of professional activity in scholarly publication and presentations.

An approach to teaching and learning that demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:
3+ years of teaching music history and related coursework at the college level.

Experience in teaching graduate coursework in music history.

Experience directing graduate students in thesis and dissertation research.

Specialty in 18th- and/or 19th-century music.

Strong record of research and publication.

UNC offers MM and DA degrees in Music History and Literature. We seek an individual who will support programs across the curriculum, especially in the current areas of American and Western European musical traditions. However, candidates with additional expertise in other styles of music are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will add breadth and depth to the current faculty's research profile and be able to work across disciplinary lines.
