The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a
GIS Technician
in the
Community Development Department . This position will assist with the GIS Division in providing an effective mapping service to City employees, consultants, and the public. This is accomplished by gathering, verifying, and editing data and generating GIS data for non-GIS employees. Other duties may include managing equipment and software and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
Work Performed:
Aid in managing the city's GIS program, with limited supervision, by following established procedures and schedules for routine maintenance of data. Assist in maintaining and updating GIS information for all City departments and help with software and GIS integration. Provide technical assistance to both internal and external users in support of project developments and the utilization of GIS data. Coordinate with GIS Manager to assist in data collection. Occasionally perform field location collection using a GNSS unit and ESRI's mobile apps. Import, integrate, update, clean and validate data from multiple sources. Create, import, edit and maintain data in the City's GIS geodatabase. Perform data analysis, map and application production. Develop comprehensive knowledge of internal structures, maintenance procedures, process customization, external interfaces, and GIS mapping development trends. Attend regional GIS meetings and work proactively with city, county and regional planning departments and organizations on related issues. Assist in the City's addressing program. Aid in maintaining the address database for software supported by GIS. Assist in the City's addressing program. Aid in maintaining the address database for the software's supported by GIS. Coordinate with county departments to share and incorporate other available data into current maps. Understand the principles and practices of cartography, automated mapping, map projections, coordinate systems, and coordinate geometry. Serve as the GIS Manager's backup as an Emergency Essential Employee-required to be available immediately before (Pre-Impact), during (emergency), and/or after the disaster or emergency condition to perform duties directly related to the emergency condition. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience
:
Some college or higher in geographic information systems, geography, landscape architecture, civil engineering, computer science, planning, drafting, computer-aided drafting and design, or other related field of study. One year of related work experience in the GIS field. Other combinations of in-depth industry and job-specific technical skills acquired through a combination of formal instruction and on-the-job training may be considered. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Previous experience following or applying routine procedures, policies, and/or methods learned on the job within limited industries. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent verbal skills, both oral and written. Must be able to effectively communicate with builders, developers, and the general public. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to effectively work with the public. Excellent administrative and problem-solving skills. Strong database skills and knowledge of query languages.. Extensive knowledge of ESRI GIS Software products with a focus on ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro. Knowledge of municipal government practices and procedures
This job will require 24-hour availability during emergency events
