The Steamboat Pilot & Today, located in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is seeking an experienced watchdog reporter to cover the City of Steamboat Springs & Routt County Government, and housing, in additional to general assignments.
The Steamboat Pilot & Today has a rich history of reporting the news in Steamboat and Routt County for over 100 years. We are looking for a strong lead reporter that is mature and ambitious, who can cover breaking news, ask top community leaders tough questions and be an experienced leader in our newsroom. We value integrity, teamwork and a commitment to the community, in addition to being able to handle the many pressures of a daily newspaper.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Write six to seven well-sourced, bylined stories and news reports per week in addition to producing staff reports and briefs
• Ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling and grammar in all your reporting
• Take photos and videos
• Demonstrates effective use of social media tools to source stories and cover breaking news
• Work with community leaders and members as well as other newsroom staff
• Be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment
• Follow direction and vision of the editor and publisher
• Make assigned deadlines without exception
• Be a team player and fill in for reporting vacancies as needed
• Be ethical within the guidelines set by the editor and publisher
Qualifications:
• Journalism degree required
• Knowledge of AP style
• Current Driver’s License
• Minimum one year reporting experience required
• Must be available to work some nights, weekends and holidays
This position will work Sunday through Thursday schedule, typically, but other days may be required based on the newsroom’s needs.
Pay $21-$25/hour depending on experience. Competitive benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance after 60 days of employment, $500 recreation bonus after 6 months and 401k plan after one year.
