The Position: This position aims to ensure library materials are available for patron use. This is accomplished by shelving books according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric) and repairing library materials. Other duties may include creating library displays and interfacing with City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
Essential Functions
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Sorts and shelves all library materials by organizing book carts, transporting books and materials to the correct location -utilizing the library classification systems, placing books and materials on shelves correctly, examining books to ensure they are in operative condition, and straightening materials as needed.
  • Checks shelves for accurate placement of materials and rearranges books to eliminate overcrowding so that the library collection is in excellent order.
  • Locates and recovers library materials for library staff and patrons from public areas. Maintains the appearance of public areas.
  • Performs various procedures before opening and closing the library by straightening chairs and picking up materials from tables.
  • Assist patrons with routine directional questions, refer patrons to the appropriate staff member, and instruct patrons on basic library equipment such as the library catalog, microfilm, self-checkout, and copier equipment.
  • Performs repairs on books, audio, and videos; cleans videos and works with processing personnel to repair new materials.
  • Creates library displays by identifying, researching, and gathering information/materials for display themes and decorating display areas.
  • Maintains back issues of library periodicals and newspapers.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience
Less than a High School Diploma or equivalent with no prior work experience.

Work Schedule
Nineteen (19) hours per week, weekends, varied hours. The schedule is subject to change.

Supervision Exercised:
Direct Supervision: Work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the task level; work is subject to both general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Physical layout of the library.

  • Dewey decimal system.

  • Basic reading and math skills.

  • Modern office equipment

Skill in:
  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with professional and support staff, vendors, the public, and City employees.

  • Safely receiving, retrieving, and reshelving books, resource materials, and audio-visual equipment.

  • Providing customer service to library patrons.

  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.


Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Standard office or similar environment.

  • Ability to stand for long periods.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, walk, climb, twist, reach, and bend.
