Creates and designs informational materials (both print and digital) to communicate scientific, medical, and public health informational messaging. Materials produced will primarily include motion graphics and animations. Additional assignments may range from presentation templates and materials (scientific posters, graphics, data visualizations), publications (fact sheets, forms, brochures, multi-chapter books, annual reports, cover design, infographics and charts for figures), and web and digital design assets (logos, icons, infographics, social media graphics, webpage graphics, scientific figures and illustrations).
Provides creative visual solutions to solve communication challenges and ensures final product conveys the intended message appropriately for the target audience.
Provides consultation, strategic guidance, and direction to internal clients, leading them through the creative design process for all assigned projects ensuring outstanding customer service.
Collaborates with subject matter experts, health communication specialists, and web and social media teams to create products. Works independently and as a team of designers to create products.
Ensures all graphics products meet the organization’s branding requirements, Section 508 accessibility standards, health equity guiding principles for inclusive communication, and other standards as identified.
Uses graphic design project management system to track status of assigned jobs, ensuring timely and efficient completion of projects.
Informs Team Lead of projects’ status and engages their support as needed to solve complex graphics problems and or challenging customer issues.
Attends team meetings, provides valuable input, and maintains strong, positive interoffice and client relations.
Basic Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Must be a US Citizen or a Green Card Holder
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the required agency clearance
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, and/or Visual Communications (with a specialty in motion design a plus)
- 8 years of experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, and Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel as related to creating visual communication products. Experience animating in Adobe Animate, Premier, etc. a plus.
- 8 years of graphic design experience, including typography, color theory, and layout design.
- A solid portfolio of work and sound recommendations that reflect clear knowledge and application of graphic design principles.
- Experience creating visually stunning motion graphics and animations for various digital media platforms, that engage viewers and effectively communicate messaging and emotions. Work on all aspects of animation, from concept to execution, including storyboarding, creating graphics and frame design, animating type/scenes/characters, adding visual effects, incorporating sound/narration, and exporting.
- Application of animation principles and techniques (including storyboarding, timing and pacing, staging, cinematography) to create visually impactful animations.
- Application of advanced typography knowledge (anatomy, kerning, tracking, leading or line spacing, typesetting, classifications, etc.) in motion graphics design.
- Agility and ability to work under pressure and produce quick turnaround when necessary. Manages complex responsibilities well in a demanding and fast-paced work environment and adapts well to quickly changing priorities.
- Attention to detail including messaging accuracy, design consistency, visual alignment, proofreading, and ability to deliver polished, high-quality work. Strong organizational skills for filing and document structure to support efficient team workflow.
- Human-centered design skills, including storytelling and implementing end-user design techniques and practices for intended audiences.
- Clear client and colleague relations and communication, open to critique, challenges, changes, and conversation about design rationale explanations and implementations.
- Ability to work effectively in an environment that supports teamwork, cooperation, trust, and the ability to work independently.
- Willingness to share knowledge with multi-talented group of creative professionals from beginner to advanced.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Experience with designing for public health organizations.
- Experience with applying brand standards and maintaining brand consistency across a wide range of presentations and materials.
- Experience designing in line with WCAG and 508 accessibility standards, including captioning video, proper color contrast and text scaling, ensuring content compatibility with screen readers and assistive technologies, H settings, Paragraph vs Character Styles, etc.
- Experience animating characters.
