The La Jolla Country Day School Library is at the heart of our vibrant school community. We're more than just books and research-we're a hub for creativity, curiosity, and connection. Our team of four library staff members works together to inspire a lifelong love of reading, learning, and discovery.
We're looking for a part-time library assistant to join our team! This person will bring energy, enthusiasm, and a collaborative spirit to support the daily activities of our Lower, Middle, and Upper School libraries. The position will be scheduled to work approximately 24 hours per week and reports to the director of libraries.
What You'll Do
- Be a Go-To Resource: Assist students, faculty, and staff with everything from finding books and using databases to troubleshooting basic tech issues (like printing or simple laptop problems).
- Showcase Creativity: Design eye-catching displays, create engaging social media posts, and use tools like Canva to promote library events, services, and new books.
- Train and Guide Student Volunteers: Mentor and supervise student library volunteers, helping them develop valuable skills such as shelving and processing books, creating displays, and assisting their peers.
- Keep Things Running Smoothly: Help with cataloging and processing new materials, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring the library space is welcoming, organized, and ready for the next wave of curious learners.
- Collaborate and Support: Work closely with your team to supervise students, promote a love of reading, and support schoolwide literacy and information literacy initiatives.
- Be Flexible and Adaptable: Step in where needed, whether it's assisting with inventory and weeding, supporting library events, or finding creative solutions to day-to-day challenges.
- You're Friendly and Approachable: People naturally feel comfortable coming to you for help. You're patient, adaptable, and a great listener.
- You're Creative and Tech-Savvy: You enjoy using digital tools like Google Suite and Canva and are excited to learn new library systems. Bonus points if you love designing promotional materials!
- You're Organized and Detail-Oriented: You can juggle multiple tasks while keeping everything running smoothly.
- You Love Books and Learning: Whether it's recommending the perfect book or sharing research tips, you're passionate about connecting others with knowledge and stories.
- You're a Team Player: You thrive in a collaborative environment and are always willing to pitch in and help.
- Bachelor's degree required (coursework in library science is a plus, but not expected!).
- Prior experience working in a library, especially in a school setting.
- Some familiarity with library practices, cataloging, and current trends in children's and young adult literature.
- Comfortable with databases, digital tools, and concepts like citing sources and information literacy.

All school personnel must successfully complete a fingerprint background check through Live Scan and provide current tuberculosis clearance.
