Publisher Job at The Palladium Times in Oswego

Sample News Group is seeking a dynamic Publisher to lead operations in Oswego, New York where we publish the Palladium Times, Fulton Valley News, Oswego County News, Oswego Shopper, and manage a commercial printing facility. 

The Publisher’s focus will be on growth and dedicated team leadership with concentration on sales, marketing, and fiscal management. Must understand the importance of preserving local stories while adhering to journalistic standards, knowledge of printing and mailroom functions, and maintaining a healthy workplace culture. Our ideal candidate will have at least five years of publishing experience and will be a positive, self-motivated, detail-oriented leader who will continually develop the skills of the team.  They must maintain an elevated level of productivity and quality, balance multiple priorities, ensure that deadlines are met, and lead the team by example.

Maintaining and growing top line revenue goals must always be a primary focus: Traditional print advertising, digital, commercial printing, and circulation. A proven record of creativity and goal setting, as well as maintaining a positive, respectful, and entrepreneurial culture is needed for this leadership role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Oversee all operations with a focus on sales & marketing, quality local journalism, and fiscal management.


• Manage P&L to ensure financial growth with ultimate responsibility for the financial health of the business unit.


• Maintain the newspaper’s positive presence in the community.


• Develop and execute strategies across multiple platforms to maximize sales.


• Direct the online footprint for the newspaper and help guide our company toward an increasing digital presence.


• Ensure exceptional service to advertisers, commercial print customers, and subscribers.


• Lead the process to recruit, evaluate and hire candidates, and manage disciplinary issues.


• Other duties and responsibilities typical of a hands-on publisher will be expected, as necessary.

 Requirements:

• A master’s or bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in the field is preferred, but not required.


• Minimum of five years’ publishing experience.


• Experience in Advertising, Circulation or Editorial in a senior leadership role.


• A strong background with sales and profit/loss (P&L) experience.


• Excellent written, oral, interpersonal communication, and customer service skills.


• General knowledge of human resources and best practices for a safe, healthy, and fair work environment at all times.
