Job Description:

Onondaga Community College's School of Art, Communications, Music, and Entrepreneurship is seeking applicants for a full-time tenure track faculty appointment in Graphic Design in the Art, Communication, Media & Music Department. The ideal candidate has strong experience in graphic design, knowledge of contemporary industry standard software, and teaching at the community college level as well as experience in at least one of the following areas: audio production, media production, photography, or social media. The candidate should also have strong writing and communication skills, strong record keeping skills, and a passion for crafting engaging content in multiple forms. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, curriculum development, participation on committees, and collaboration with colleagues to assess student learning outcomes.

The successful candidate will be qualified to teach the following classes:

  • ART-142 Intro to Computer Graphics
  • ART-203 Typography and Layout
  • ART-204 Intermediate Computer Graphics
  • ART-218 Art in Animation
  • ART-224 Design for Multimedia
  • ART 240 Advanced Graphic Design
  • ART 244 Visual Design for the Web

Ideal candidates will also be able to teach some of the following classes:

  • COM 110 Introduction to Social Media
  • COM 241 Building a Brand
  • PHO 100 Basic Photography
  • PHO 170 Studio Lighting and Techniques
  • Other technical courses as necessary

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be responsive to student questions and available for student support.
  • Use appropriate technology to enhance learning.
  • Assess learning outcomes and adapt curriculum to meet learning objectives.
  • Demonstrate insight and encouragement in working with diverse student populations, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
  • Provide appropriate academic advising to students to support timely degree completion.
  • Be innovative in the presentation of lectures and hands-on learning activities that achieve learning outcomes.
  • Provide timely feedback on students' assignments and exams throughout each semester; and,
  • Be accountable to meet the needs of the Department and the College, including timely submission of grades and other required materials.


Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Appointment at the Rank of Assistant Professor:

  • Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.

OR

  • Master's degree a related field with area of concentration in graphic and/or fine arts and teaching experience in either higher education or grades 9-12.

OR

  • Bachelor's degree in related field (computer graphics, photography, multimedia design), with at least 4 years of professional experience working the field of art, media, or graphic design and at least 12 credits of upper-level undergraduate or higher coursework in art theory, color theory, visual communication, art history, computer art, photography, or computer/digital graphics. At least 3 of these credits must be in art theory or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience in related field.
  • Demonstrated connections with local industry.
  • Community College teaching experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish & English. English and another language also will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Highly skilled in graphic design.
  • Experience in other traditional studio arts is desirable.
  • Experience with current industry standard graphics typography, and animation software such as the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in at least one of the following additional areas:
    • Audio Production.
    • Media Production.
    • Photography.
    • Social Media.
  • Ability to communicate well.
  • Ability to keep accurate and complete records.


Additional Information:

  • The 2023-2024 starting salary for the rank of Assistant Professor is $56,250
    • Full-time faculty can earn an additional $15,000 -$20,000 annually, by teaching more than 15 credits during each regular semester, and by teaching during off-hand periods.
    • Salaries for 2024-2025 are not yet available.
