ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has been funded by PNC to deliver a collaborative education initiative titled Project WoW (World of Wonder) to engage low to moderate income preschool children in a new model for early childhood education that focuses on the integration of science and arts across existing curriculum. The initiative includes weeklyhands-on-lesson plans for preschool students at education partner sites, in-depth year-long mentoring for teachers, and a family engagement component. Project WoW will support improved learning outcomes in preschool students by mentoring preschool teachers and leading 50-minute long in-classroom lessons that encourage students to explore and interpret their world. Take-home family learning activities will encourage parents to become stewards of their child’s education while helping young learners see themselves and their role models as lifelong learners.

POSITION SUMMARY

Project WoW Teaching Artists will serve as mentors for preschool teachers in select schools throughout Central Florida. The teaching artists will lead weekly 50-minute long in-classroom lessons during the school year (October through May).

This is a temporary, part-time position. Schedule will be 8:45am - 11:00am Wednesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead weekly 50-minute in-classroom lessons at a local elementary school in conjunction with the pre-school teacher.
  • Attend mandatory education teaching artist training sessions, meetings, professional development sessions and occasional special events
  • Submit written lesson plans, assessment, teaching schedules, attendance sheets and payment invoice forms.
  • Prepare materials, coordinate and obtain equipment, materials and supplies needed for classes with education staff.
  • Follow and support all operational policies and procedures. Assimilate into the arts center culture through understanding, supporting and demonstrating the core values.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly relationship with other departments, colleagues, and partners.
  • Able to remain calm under pressure. Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy. Maintain Dr. Phillips Center standards of customer service at all times.
  • Able to effectively communicate in English in both written and oral forms.
  • Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Candidates should have demonstrated experience in a performing arts discipline.
  • Bachelor’s degree, MFA or related training preferred with a minimum of two years teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate expertise working as a professional artist and exhibit a strong commitment to working with educators and people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Availability to work during school hours, after-school hours, as well as occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft software/applications.
  • Experience working in an educational setting a plus.
  • Outgoing, people-oriented person with strong written, verbal, organization, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of performing/teaching in busy non-traditional classroom settings.
  • Ability to facilitate group discussion and decision making
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, problem solve, be flexible, innovative and imaginative.
  • Strong attention to detail.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This position requires the ability to work a variable schedule, evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
  • Must provide own transportation to school sites in Central Florida community.
