The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center is the preeminent entertainment venue in northern Arizona hosting hundreds of events on the stage and in the facility. The Audio Engineer is a key member of the Back of House team. The JLLPAC is looking for an experienced Sound Engineer to join our staff. The ideal candidate for this position has extensive experience working in live venues, a background in music production and a strong technical knowledge, including a familiarity with sound boards, microphones and various types of instrumentation. A successful candidate will also have an excellent sense of direction and the ability to multitask while listening to multiple cues at once.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sound Reinforcement: Set up and operate sound reinforcement systems, including microphones, amplifiers, speakers, and signal processing equipment, to achieve clear and balanced audio for live events.
- System Calibration: Calibrate and tune audio systems to the acoustics of the venue, ensuring optimal sound quality and coverage throughout the space.
- Mixing and Balancing: Mix and balance the sound of different instruments, vocals, and audio sources in real-time during live performances. This involves adjusting levels, equalization, and effects to achieve a cohesive and pleasing audio blend.
- Monitor Mixing: Manage monitor mixes for performers on stage, ensuring they can hear themselves and other band members clearly. This may involve creating individual monitor mixes tailored to each performer's preferences.
- Troubleshooting: Quickly identify and troubleshoot technical issues related to sound equipment, cables, or connectivity during live events to minimize disruptions.
- Collaboration with Performers: Communicate effectively with musicians, performers, and event organizers to understand their audio requirements and preferences.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and troubleshoot audio equipment, ensuring it is in proper working condition. This includes routine checks and repairs as needed.
- Sound Check: Conduct sound checks before events to fine-tune the audio system, addressing any issues and ensuring a smooth and balanced sound during the actual performance.
- Adaptability: Adapt to different genres of music, performance styles, and venue characteristics to deliver optimal sound experiences for a diverse range of events.
- Time Management: Effectively manage time during live events, coordinating cues, transitions, and adjustments seamlessly to maintain a consistent and high-quality audio experience.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively with fellow engineers, stage managers, technicians, stagehands, and directors.
- Ensure that the final mix accurately represents the artist's original intent and the director's/talents' vision.
- Create a comfortable environment for artists and patrons and balance with equal levels of sound in all speakers.
- Evaluate and design new systems or processes to improve workflow, efficiency, or effectiveness.
- Take responsibility for recording, mixing, and producing music.
- Mix audio tracks to balance levels, fix timing, or remove blemishes.
- Incorporate sound effects into existing audio tracks.
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
- Professional Certification or Degree in Broadcast Technology, Audio Engineering or Music Technology.
- 1000 hours of professional live audio mixing experience.
- Dante Certification.
- Working knowledge of the Yamaha CL5 audio board and Meyer audio systems.
- Experience working live musicals with a large cast.
- Management experience overseeing an audio team.
- Working knowledge of Qlab.
- Experience with Waves software.
- Working knowledge of Shure Wireless Systems.
- Working knowledge of face mics and lavaliers.
