Hours: 29 hours/week

Schedule: Some flexibility providing coverage revolves around the library’s hours (M 10-2, T 1-7, TH 10-5 F & S 10-1). Includes with some Evenings and Saturdays.

Supervisor: Director of Library Relations

The Library Manager is responsible for the daily operations of Red Land Community Library, a York County Libraries (YCL) branch. These operations function within the framework of YCL goals, objectives, policies, and budgets. The Library Manager will succeed as they work in an efficient, effective manner while building relationships, both internally and externally. The Library Manager supervises branch staff (3 part-time employees) and volunteers plus works collaboratively with the Friends of the Library.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master of Library Science from accredited university or college preferred. Minimum three years of related professional level library experience preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of library operations and services.
  • Extensive computer, internet, and software experience, including but not limited to internet research; online databases; ILS software and hardware; and Microsoft Office.
  • Supervisory and administrative experience. Minimum three years of supervision preferred.
  • Candidate must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Experience with collection development.
  • Child Abuse clearance, Pennsylvania Criminal History Check, FBI Criminal Record Check and Mandated Reporter Training.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate staff and volunteers. Engage library staff to create a harmonious and productive team environment. Promote a positive, cooperative, and flexible environment that is open to change and new ideas.
  • Share and uphold system-wide member service standards with staff and volunteers and ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Work with Director of Library Relations in establishing, communicating, and achieving annual goals.
  • Select, merchandise, and evaluate the performance of materials for the library’s collection.
  • Prepare reports and presentations as required by YCL and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. Attend meetings held by YCL and contribute/participate actively.
  • Attend and represent the library at meetings, including YCL meetings, community organizations (chamber of Commerce, School District), and local boroughs and townships.
  • Manages and supervises all aspects of the library’s operation: finances, maintaining expenses within approved budget lines, marketing, community outreach, building maintenance, safety and security.
  • Build partnerships in the community by establishing relationships with current and potential funders, local politicians, and community leaders, advocates on behalf of the library.
  • Program development, implementation, and evaluation. Coordinate programs to encourage the use of the YCL’s services and maintain a vision and strategic plan for the library.
  • Promote services directly to the public and through collaborative efforts with other libraries, schools, government agencies, and community organizations. This includes developing plans, preparing materials, attending meetings, and participating in countywide activities. Frequent interaction and coordination with Marketing Department is vital.
  • Support and lead the Friends group in their fundraising responsibilities to help support Red Land Community Library. Plus helping Friends to advocate for the library as well as YCL at the local, county, and state level.
  • Maintain awareness of changes in the local community, including changes in the demographics which could affect the needs for library services. Adapt services to meet the changing needs. Stay abreast of technology in order to work with databases, information systems, social media and other pertinent new technologies.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to bend, squat, and kneel occasionally throughout work shift.
  • Must be able to push/pull carts weighing up to 120 pounds. Must be able to reach, lift, and stretch throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk up to four hours at a time. Must be able to sit for up to four hours at a time.
