Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a motivated and skilled Junior to Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Associate Attorney to join their team in New York City. This role is ideal for an individual with a passion for patent law, particularly in emerging technologies such as software, artificial intelligence, IoT, and quantum technologies. The ideal candidate will possess strong academic credentials, relevant patent prosecution experience, and excellent communication skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and prosecute patent applications for product design, user interfaces, and cutting-edge technologies.
- Conduct thorough patentability assessments, including prior art searches and analyses.
- Collaborate with clients to understand their technology and business goals, ensuring patents align with strategic objectives.
- Draft high-quality patent applications, including claims and specifications, in areas related to software, AI, IoT, networking, and quantum technologies.
- Represent clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in matters related to patent prosecution.
- Conduct interviews with patent examiners and respond to Office Actions from the USPTO.
- Advise clients on patent portfolio management and intellectual property strategy.
- Assist in preparing legal opinions on patentability, infringement, and validity issues.
- Stay current on technological advancements and changes in patent law to provide informed counsel to clients.
Job Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum of 2+ years of relevant patent preparation and prosecution experience, particularly in product design and user interface technologies.
- Industry Experience: Exposure to or experience with the following technology areas is highly preferred:
- Software-related technologies
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies
- Internet of Things (IoT), networking, and related technologies
- Quantum technologies
- Writing and Communication: Superb legal writing and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and concisely.
- Patent Prosecution: Prior experience managing patent prosecution from application drafting through issuance is essential.
- Law Firm and Industry Experience: Solid experience working within a law firm, coupled with an understanding of engineering or related industries.
Education and Certifications:
- JD Degree: Must possess a Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- USPTO Admission: Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
- Technical Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field is required.
