Summary This position is located within the Engineering Service, Projects & Construction Management Section (P&CM) at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Long Beach, CA. The position is responsible for the direction and supervision of the Interior Design Group which performs professional, technical and administrative interior design work associated with the planning and design activities at this highly complex multi-mission medical center. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Designs patient-friendly environments; Distributes and balances the workload on employees in accordance with established workflow or jobs specialization; Develops performance standards; Evaluates work performance; Resolves complaints of employees at an informal level; Acts as a voting member of the Facility Improvement & Space Committee at respective site with a primary focus of reviewing application requests for moves and minor construction projects; Inspects, replaces, reconfigures furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E); Participates in the Environment of Care inspection program; Researches and prepares technical interior design specifications; Prepares space and interior design plans, using computer-aided drafting and software applications, such as AutoCAD, Revit, etc. and free hand sketches; Maintains knowledge of construction costs, and time frames for completion of work; Provides input and assist in the implementation of an optimal facility wide strategic space utilization and development plan; Maintains interior and exterior signage and wayfinding; Identifies employee developmental needs and provides or arranges for training; Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 You may be required to serve a probationary period Subject to background/security investigation Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP) - See "Additional Information" below for details. Qualifications Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Supervisory Interior Designer, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience that required the performance of work concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as: Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment; Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings; Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Administration and Management Design Leadership Planning and Evaluating Project Management IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
