Description:

The Logan Library is seeking a new employee to help us spark creation, exploration, and collaboration in our community.

Under general supervision, the Library Technical Assistant's primary responsibilities will be assisting the public while staffing library service desks and assisting Librarians with collections and programming.

The employee will work 40 hours per week, including weekday, weekend, and evening shifts.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent;

Able to reach, push, pull, sit, squat and move repetitively (with or without a library cart), and also to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities:

Include, but are not limited to: Service desk shifts: welcome patrons to the library; answer phone calls; assist patrons in locating materials and information; provide information services such as assisting patrons with using analog and digital resources, the online catalog, and library apps; create accounts and issue library cards for new patrons, and renew accounts for existing patrons; properly receive and record money for fines, prints, book sale, etc.; help patrons use computers and other devices; check library materials in and out; empty the book drops; check items for missing pieces and damage; shelve patron holds; sort items onto carts; conduct regular walkabouts; shelve returned items as needed.

Collections work: open shipments; barcode and process new materials; mend damaged items; remove materials from the collection, as determined by the collection Librarians.

Programming: help organize, promote, and staff library events.

General: provide excellent customer service; prioritize patron privacy; work on assigned tasks and special projects as directed by your supervising Librarian or administration; understand and follow complex written and verbal procedures and guidelines; enforce board policies; attend staff meetings and trainings; help with the general upkeep of the library building; stop and report any dangerous or unethical behavior; exemplify the mission and pillars of the Logan Library; uphold the behavior standards listed in the Staff Code of Conduct; represent the library and Logan City in a professional manner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidates for this position should have:

  • a desire to serve our community;
  • a willingness to learn, help, and share;
  • excellent customer service skills;
  • an attention to detail;
  • at least a basic understanding of the organization of library collections and of shelving practices (alphabetizing and placing materials in numerical order);
  • the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public, including in high-stress situations;
  • the skills to understand complex written and verbal instructions and guidelines in English;
  • practice successfully using common technologies (e.g. computers, tablets, printers, the Internet, email, word processing, mobile phone apps).

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • experience working in a library, especially helping patrons find the items or information they are seeking using online resources; barcoding, processing, and mending materials in a variety of formats; and planning and carrying out programs;
  • a knowledge of the Logan Library and the organization of its collections, including the Dewey Decimal Classification system;
  • fluency in the Spanish language.
