Essential Job Functions

The Research & Digital Creation Specialist helps patrons at both the Local and Family History (LFH) desk and in the Digital Lab (Studio 304). Under the supervision of the Research and Digital Creation Manager, and with an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Research & Digital Creation Specialist will:

  1. Provide hands-on customer service at the Service Desks during all scheduled working hours.

  2. LFH desk: Provide hands-on reference service to patrons and organizations for local history and genealogy topics using pertinent reference materials and electronic resources. Assist with the use of LFH equipment, such as microfilm machines and digitization stations.

  3. Studio 304 desk: Provide hands-on guidance for creative projects using a variety of design software, tools, and sound recording equipment. Operate a variety of 3-D creation machines. Check out digital lab equipment to patrons.

  4. Participate in merchandising and maintaining department appearance. Assist departmental staff with projects while working at the service desks.

  5. Make recommendations for service changes to optimize the users’ experience.

  6. Perform basic computer and equipment maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.

  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or a related field from an accredited four year college or university.

  • A valid State of Indiana Librarian Certification, Level 5 obtained within three years of hire as a condition of employment.

  • At least 1 year of experience working directly with the public required.

  • Experience with music production or recording arts preferred.

  • Interest in local history or genealogy.

Hours

  • Full time (40 hour workweek).
  • Evening and weekend work as required.
  • Flexible availability for emergency situations.

Wages

  • Starting/Hiring Range: $18.35 - $22.02, Hourly
  • Total Salary Range: $18.35 - $25.69, Hourly

Requirements

  • Spanish language skills preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.

  • Public service orientation and commitment to excellent and genuine customer service.

  • Demonstration of character and integrity in all situations while upholding SJCPL’s ethical standards.

  • Practical experience and proficiency with computers, including the Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Windows, Mac OS, and communication technologies.

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of library materials and services.

  • Physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, and move library materials (20-25 lbs.) and to stand for long periods of time.

  • Enthusiasm for conducting research and interest in local history topics.
