The Teen and Adult Services Librarian plans, promotes, and implements a vibrant series of programs and services for teens and adults. This position also provides responsive reference and research assistance for diverse customers’ information needs, assists customers with computer use, manages the adult and young adult collections, including the periodicals collection, at their primary library location, and participates in community outreach and collaborative efforts. Work requires accuracy, judgment, and excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with the public to resolve problems and complaints.


Work is performed under the general direction of the Library Director.


Qualification Requirements

  1. Plans, promotes, and implements and/or coordinates services and programs for teens and adults.
  2. Maintains adult and young adult public services area in a welcoming, user-friendly environment.
  3. Provides reference, reader’s advisory and instructional services in individual and group settings using print and digital resources.
  4. Participates in collection development of assigned collections, through selection and weeding in assigned subject areas.
  5. Manages the periodical collection.
  6. Promotes library collections, technology and services through presentations, programs, library tours, topical displays and outreach activities such as school and community visits.
  7. Prepares statistics and reports related to programming.
  8. Actively develops and practices readers’ advisory skills to promote reading for every age and reading level.
  9. Acts as volunteer coordinator for their primary library location.
  10. Performs general library duties such as assisting patrons at the circulation desk, assisting patrons with public computers and other basic technology assistance.
  11. Assist with other duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and public library experience.
  2. Experience working in a public library setting, with a focus on teen and adult services preferred.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  4. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  5. Proficient in the use of library databases, digital resources, and standard office software.
  6. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  7. Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental condition.
