Student Librarian - Youth Department (Library Assistant III)

The West Vancouver Memorial Library (WVML) has an opening for a Student Librarian to work in the Youth Department. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about public libraries to work with kids, families, and educators, while also getting some experience serving adults.

The WVML is known throughout the province for innovation, responsiveness, and leadership. Reporting to the Head of Youth Services, duties (with assistance from a Librarian) will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assisting kids and families with reader’s advisory and reference at the Youth Department public service desk
  2. Opportunities to facilitate programming, especially Early Years storytimes
  3. Assisting patrons of all ages with technology to meet a variety of information needs

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates should be enrolled in the UBC iSchool or an equivalent program at another educational institution and pursuing a MLIS degree. Essential requirements are:

  1. a passion for customer service and connecting people with online library resources and programs
  2. excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  3. experience or interest/comfort working with both kids and seniors
  4. experience with accessing and downloading digital content (ex: e-books, e-audiobooks)
  5. the ability to work well as part of a team
  6. a strong interest in or previous experience with mobile technology, apps and instructional design

The preferred candidate will be available for at least one 4-7 hour shift per week, including weekends.

The successful candidate will be required to supply an acceptable Vulnerable Sector police information check.

Position Status: Union (WVMEA) – Casual

Hours of Work: Up to 25 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)

Starting Rate of Pay: $27.03 per hour plus 4% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates)
