The City of Appleton is seeking applications for a full-time Library Clerk. This is a non-exempt benefited position that involves working at public service desks providing all of the library services related to lending library materials and information queries, as well as performing off-desk tasks. Evening and weekend work is required. Work is supervised by the Public Services Supervisor and Public Services Assistant Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide courteous and efficient customer service at the information circulation desks: Checkout library materials, register patrons, handle routine questions, locate materials and provide directional assistance.
  2. Accurately communicate library policies and procedures to the public.
  3. Computer data entry and database maintenance through the library automation system, as well as regular review/processing of system reports.
  4. Answer telephone calls from the public or route appropriately.
  5. Collect fines and fees, accurately key such transactions into a cash register.
  6. Assist in providing interlibrary loan services.
  7. Monitor security gates.
  8. Check shelves for missing, partial, and claims returned materials.
  9. Assist with billing processes, including preparing bills and overdues for mailing, distributing intra-office mail.
  10. Retrieve materials on reserve for patrons or other libraries and route them accordingly.
  11. Maintain regular punctual and predictable attendance, work overtime and extra hours as required.
  12. Serve as Notary Public and provide this service upon request.

  1. Contribute to collection development under the direction of the Public Services Supervisor.
  2. Prepare displays and promote library services.
  3. Knowledge of general library services and practices.
  4. Good organizational skills, ability to sort materials in alphabetical and numerical order.
  5. Tactful and courteous communication skills.
  6. Computer skills: turning on/off, soft reboot, mouse, keyboarding, saving a file, email.
  7. Ability to learn library procedures and circulation software, adapt to changes.
  8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Ability to work as a team member, maintaining effective relationships with co-workers.
  10. Ability to stand and walk for several hours at a time.
  11. Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.; push a loaded book cart (200 lbs.) on carpeting.
  12. Ability to read fine print (font sizes of 8 or larger).
