GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: This clerical position has an integral role in the children's department. This position will be a story time substitute and also help with inventory, weeding, stats, and programming. The Library Clerk works flexible hours, including days, evenings and weekends. The ability to be trained in the use of computers, printers, phones and databases is required. This position is cross trained at desks throughout the Library.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide pleasant and courteous customer service; assist library patrons in finding materials.
  2. Answer the telephone and direct calls to the appropriate staff person in a timely and courteous manner.
  3. Use computers to provide essential services such as circulation, catalog searching, etc.
  4. Shelf-read, inventory materials, re-shelve materials.
  5. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  6. Understand and be able to explain library policies and procedures.
  7. Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to work well with people.
  8. Any specific requirements that are stated in the “letter of employment offer.”

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Clean books; cover books; minor book repairs.
  2. Provide instruction in the correct use of photocopiers, microfilm readers, typewriters and computers.
  3. Prepare signs, reports and notices.
  4. Other tasks and duties as assigned.

DESIRED QUALITIES OR SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  1. Alphabetical and Dewey Filing Systems.
  2. Standard safety practices.
  3. Strong computer skills or the ability to learn them quickly and their applications in libraries.

Ability to:

  1. Have the desire and willingness to provide high levels of public service to customers and other City employees.
  2. Work independently; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  3. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with people contacted during the course of work.
  4. Stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time; lift or carry up to 40 pounds; push or pull.
  5. Reach up to library shelves.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Library experience.

WHEN ASSIGNED TO SHELVING:

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under supervision, this position sorts, arranges in order, shelves materials and maintains library materials in an orderly fashion.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Shelving of books, audio/visual items, and other materials.
  2. Shelf reading books to determine accurate order of materials.
  3. Shifts and straightens materials as needed.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist library patrons in locating materials or directs them to the appropriate library personnel for further assistance.
  2. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  1. Alphabetical and Dewey Filing Systems.

Ability to:

  1. See, read, and understand title, call numbers and dates; sort accurately by alphabetical, numerical, chronological or Dewey Decimal order.
  2. Stand for extended period of time; squat, stretch, or reach up or down to shelve materials; manipulate library materials up to 20 pounds.
  3. Grip library materials; push and pull fully loaded library book carts weighing 100-300 lbs.
  4. Follow oral and written instructions.
  5. After four weeks on the job training: Shelve fully loaded book cart (4 shelves) in 1 hour and sorts a loaded cart in 30 minutes.
  6. Adhere to library policies and procedures.
  7. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
