Job Summary
Under the direction of the Access Services Supervisor, provides support for the library by performing circulation functions using the Integrated Library System (ILS), maintaining circulation information and assisting other departments as needed.

Equipment, tools and computer software includes but is not limited to: Computers/monitors/keyboard/mouse, Windows Operating System including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, online communication tools such as Zoom and Teams for meetings and daily communication with library staff and WesternU community, ILS, print management system, scheduling software, barcode scanners, library sensitizers and desensitizers, cash register, library receipt printers, shredders, printers, telephones, photocopy machines, scanners, cameras, fax machine, laminating machine and any other equipment and software needed for the position.
Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma, and any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience with customer service and cash handling, one year or more.
- Excellent computer skills to utilize library software programs; Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; other software needed for the position.
- Ability to effectively troubleshoot basic technical issues and refer issues to the appropriate department if needed.
- Strong decision-making and critical thinking skills.
- Displays excellent customer service skills when interacting with internal and external customers. Ability to work with a diverse population by promoting an inclusive and positive team environment. Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills.
- Detail oriented and quick learner; work must be highly accurate.
Preferred Qualifications
More than one year of experience in an academic library customer service position.
Good basic mathematic abilities to calculate fines and fees for library customers and for other areas of the job as needed. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate ideas and problems effectively. Strong problem-solving skills to prevent and correct mistakes and create alternative ways to complete a task successfully. Good listening skills to understand internal and external customer requests and issues, be able to address or refer to the appropriate person or department.
Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology helpful to position.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides excellent customer service support by effectively and accurately answering questions in person, by telephone, email and chat; displays an approachable, friendly and professional demeanor with effective verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Assists library customers with use of the online catalog and provides basic training on library resources and equipment.
- Circulates library materials; collects fines and fees; processes holds; sorts and distributes incoming/outgoing mail; processes fax requests and performs opening and closing procedures for all floors as needed.
- Assists students with study room reservations upon request and manages study room access.
- Provides general tours of the Pumerantz Library for individuals and groups. May assist other library departments with special projects as needed.
- Accurately enters all money collected daily into the ILS and cash register, balances cash drawer and runs/prints all cash reports.
- Shelves books; searches for missing, lost and overdue materials; ensures library items are in their correct location by shelf reading. Processes books/journals/media and accurately enters data into the ILS. Performs basic repair on library materials.
- Participates and supports library marketing efforts including student, faculty and staff events and other promotional activities.
- Adds money to patron accounts and troubleshoots print management system. Handles refunds as needed.
- Performs data entry to keep student, faculty and staff records updated.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
This position works primarily evenings and weekends.
