Job Summary
Library Aides are the frontline for library service and require delivery of excellent customer service and strong interpersonal skills. This position performs a variety of library related tasks such as assisting patrons at the public service desk, demonstrating information literacy, processing library materials, assisting with computer related tasks and new technologies, interlibrary loan requests and processes, and assisting librarians with programs and other library duties as assigned. Evenings and weekends are required. May assist at other library locations.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment.
- Must be able to use Integrated Library System (ILS) to create, evaluate and clear patron records correctly when collecting payments; maintaining confidentiality is essential.
- Knowledge of electronic devices and apps used by library resources.
- Assist patrons with copiers, digital microfilm reader/scanners, and other equipment common to library environment.
- Promote and assist with library programs and resources to patrons.
- Sort and distribute mail, prepare newspapers and serials for public area.
- Perform all tasks related to opening and closing procedures.
- Assist with daily deposit.
- Shelve library materials.
- Maintain a clean and safe library environment.
- Answer incoming phone calls and assist with patron queries.
Minimum Education & Experience
High school graduate or GED is required. 2 years of customer service experience, library experience, cash handling experience, office experience, or some equivalent combination is preferred.
Special Certifications & Licenses
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Independence & Judgement
Minimal judgment: instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems.
Initiative & Ingenuity
Low chance of error because work is routine; standard procedures are followed.
Supervisory & Responsibility
Does not supervise.
Financial Responsibility
Takes money (fines, fees, etc.), gives receipts, does own balancing; handles petty cash; makes purchases over $200.
Level & Frequency of Outside Contact
Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; courtesy and tact are required.
Physical Demands
Office job with little or occasional light physical effort; involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular basis.
Responsibility for Equipment & Property
Responsible for use of office equipment and supplies.
Working Conditions
Office job, no adverse conditions.
