Job Description:

Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking outgoing, compassionate, and detail-oriented individuals to join our diverse team dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for lifelong learning, empowerment, and creating moments of discovery for our community.

If you have experience working with children of all ages and love creating programs, demonstrating technology, sharing reading experiences, and exploring areas of research with youth, the Indian River Library position will provide the challenging work you are looking for. This full-time Library Assistant II may be asked to work at any public service desk (Circulation, Adult Services, or Youth and Family Services), primarily focusing on youth and family services in a library that serves a large tween and teen group during the school year.

Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) has a well-established Youth and Family Services (YFS) department with a dynamic track record of providing quality services for children, young adults, and teens. Responsibilities include planning and delivering a diverse selection of programs, including Summer Reading and STEM/STEAM, for children, tweens, and teens both inside the library and through outreach; working with and mentoring unsupervised youth; using library computers and technology to help patrons find materials and services to meet their unique needs; and participating in CPL system-wide committees and initiatives.

The weekly schedule is varied and includes day, evening, and weekend hours and may also include after-hours programming.

Required Qualifications:

VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of six months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months’ public library experience is preferred.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Public Library experience is preferred but another library, youth development, youth literature, and STEM/STEAM experience will be considered.
  • Experience with automated circulation systems is highly desired.

Examples of recommended preferred qualifications related to the job description:

  1. Experience working with unsupervised children, tweens, and teens
  2. Experience or interest in developing programs and activities for children, tweens, and teens
  3. Mentoring and/or leading tweens and/or teens
  4. Knowledge of popular or current middle grade and teen literature and familiarity with youth literature
  5. Ability to work independently for assigned tasks
