Job: Band/Music Teacher

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Building Principal, the teacher is responsible for teaching music education to all students in grades 5-8, as well as teaching our 5-8 band and chorus groups. The teacher will also be responsible for helping students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, the playing of instruments, and listening. The teacher performs other duties directly related to this job description.

Qualifications:

  • State Certification in Music or related area
  • Bachelor's degree in Music
  • Expertise working with middle school students

Reports To: BMS Principal

Supervises: None

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Create and maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students.
  2. Build and execute a comprehensive music curriculum for students in grades 5-8, accounting for a wide range of learners.
  3. Use updated pedagogical practices and techniques to execute an evolving curriculum.
  4. Build a comprehensive band program for students in grades 5-8, accounting for a wide range of abilities.
  5. Work with the High School band teacher to build our band program.
  6. Plan and organize two concerts throughout the year.
  7. Model how to use and maintain a variety of instruments.
  8. Select and utilize resources that enhance learner understanding and help make content material relevant to student lives.
  9. Provide practice and re-teaching opportunities based on assessment data to support student success.
  10. Monitor and evaluate student performance on assessments, adjusting instruction to accommodate student learning.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of school procedures, operations, and policies.
  12. Coordinate, collaborate, and integrate cross-subject activities with grade-level teachers.
  13. Participate in PLCs with other Unified Arts teachers.
  14. Communicate student concerns to appropriate stakeholders including administration, other teachers, parents, and school counselors.
  15. Respond to parent/student concerns and provide feedback when appropriate.
  16. Use assessment data and school building goals to prepare and implement an intervention period.
  17. Evaluate, interpret, and utilize standardized test scores and other student data for parents, students, and teachers to support individual student achievement in a 21st-century learning environment.
  18. Participate in professional growth activities and complete a professional development plan that includes professional conferences and workshops related to best practices in the field of music and band education.
  19. Perform other such duties related to this position as may be assigned.
