Overview

The Engineering Liaison Office (ELO), in conjunction with Piping Design, is presently seeking highly-motivated designers with the ability to develop 3D product models to relocate to Newport News, VA, to support Design Yard oversight for COLUMBIA Class construction at the Newport News Shipyard. This position would work for Delano Wilson in the Mechanical and Piping specific COLUMBIA Class deckplate team.

The chosen candidate will be required to answer various types of Change Requests (CRs) / Change Notices (CNs) for COLUMBIA Class Submarines under construction at Newport News Shipyard (NNS) using NX/Team Center. The job will require occasional shipboard investigations on sub-assembly units and modules under various stages of construction. The candidate will be required to interface with NNS trades, engineering, design, construction foreman, and planners while developing timely resolutions in consideration of an aggressive construction schedule.

Interfacing with ELO Engineering, EB cognizant Engineering/Design, Materials, Planning, Welding, and Noise Departments will also be required; therefore, the ability to work well in a team environment and with outside personnel is pivotal to success in this position. The candidate must also possess sufficient written and verbal skills, as well as the ability to problem-solve and prioritize work. Time flexibility is required as the workload can vary, requiring occasional extended hours.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma/GED or Vocational High School diploma
  • 6+ years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (portfolio) with Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Completed CAD training through an academic institution or has previous employment experience using CAD

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (portfolio) with AutoCAD/CATIA/NX
  • Familiarity with Design Standards, Military Specifications, Manufacturing Processes, Design for Six Sigma, Lean Design/Manufacturing
