Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) is a diversified media company with expansive reach at the national and local level dedicated to empowering and enriching communities. We seek to inspire, inform, and connect audiences as a scalable, growth-focused media and digital marketing solutions company. Our current portfolio of trusted media brands includes the USA TODAY NETWORK, comprised of the national publication, USA TODAY, and local media organizations in the United States. The Detroit Free Press/freep.com, the largest metro publication within the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a stellar sports writer to tackle one of the most challenging high school beats in the nation.
The Freep’s high school beat is more than just game coverage; the ideal candidate is as comfortable describing a game-winning drive in the state title game at Ford Field as they are detailing the various challenges facing an athlete. An athlete’s story starts well before the opening tipoff, kickoff, or faceoff, and the Freep’s high school sports reporter will use clear, concise language to bring readers into their lives, with an eye toward publication on multiple platforms (including print, digital, social, and audio).
We are looking for a reporter who can dig up compelling stories and engage our audience year-round with timely storytelling and engaging photo, video, and audio.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two (2) years of reporting experience.
- Experience building a brand on social media.
- Command of media law, media ethics, and copyright law.
- Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
- Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.
- Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
- Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- Applies innovative, creative thinking to support team’s goals.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
Application Instructions:
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a résumé; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
- Your updated current resume – one to two pages.
- A cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position.
- Your portfolio/clips/links to a few samples of your work.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
