General Description

Assist students in the Writing Center, tutor students in reading, composition, and study skills, and serve as mentor to student staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Have completed ENGL 1113 (English Composition I) or equivalent and ENGL 1213 (English Composition II) or equivalent with a final grade of B or above.
OR
Have successfully completed ENGL 1113 (English Composition I) or equivalent and ENGL 1213 (English Composition II) or equivalent and be recommended by a faculty member who can speak to the candidate’s qualifications for the position (letter of recommendation must be provided and must accompany a writing sample).

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing skills and knowledge of grammar.
  • Accurate filing skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Positive human relations skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills, particularly when composing professional and effective email messages.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and knowledge of basic computer troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship experience.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sedentary work: The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: This position requires the person to frequently move about the lab to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position. This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, and staff to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.

3. VISUAL ACUITY: This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS: This position performs the essential functions in an indoor lab, classroom, or office setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Tutoring experience or experience working in an environment of higher education.

Work Hours

Flexible hours during the time the Writing Center is open, Monday through Saturday.

Job Duties

  • Assist students in individualized exercises performed in the Writing Center.
  • Assist students with their writing through the Writing Center’s online tutoring program.
  • Provide supplemental instruction to clarify and reinforce classroom instruction and text.
  • Assist faculty and students in the use of computers, computer learning programs, and worksheets.
  • Assist in simple cleaning of center carrels, tables, desks, computer keyboards, and computer screens, as directed by the supervisor.
  • Provide information to faculty regarding student progress and center use by filling out tutoring form.
  • Participate in and assist with tutor training programs.
  • Perform miscellaneous filing and other clerical duties for the Writing Center center.
  • Conduct tours of the Writing Center and in-class presentations as needed.
  • Serve as mentor and offer training to student staff.
  • Complete special projects, as assigned by supervisor and Writing Center Assistants.
