Scope of Job

The Department of Creative Writing Program is seeking candidates for our Graduate Assistantship Program. Candidates must be accepted in the MFA in Creative Writing Program and demonstrate a commitment to working in collaboration with the department chair, faculty, other student staff members, campus and community partners, and the department Administrative Assistant. They will also complete all trainings for employment. Candidates with experience in creative writing event organizing, publicity (including graphic design and social media), podcast production and/or related work are preferred.

Graduate Assistant Duties

Graduate assistant duties include collaborating on organizing and co-hosting the department’s visiting writer and student reading series events from room reservations, publicity, days-of-events assistance, and related event programming tasks. Other duties include assisting with the department podcast and publicity work, tabling for the department, assisting professors, and/or completing other department activities and duties as assigned, including attending weekly meetings with supervisor(s).

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

  1. Maximum appointment is limited to twenty (20) hours per week (50% FTE).
  2. Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  3. Must be in good academic standing.
  4. Be registered full-time for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, and three semester credit hours during the summer session) or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.
