Location: Syracuse University

Pay Range: Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Hours: As determined by department/chair. Office hours are required.

Job Description: The department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition at Syracuse University is seeking individuals to fill available Writing Consulting assignments for the Spring 2025 semester. These offerings are either 5 (1.5 credit) or 10 (3 credit) hours per week, dependent on availability and need. Prior experience as a Writing Consultant in the Writing Center at Syracuse University is strongly preferred. Current internal applicants will receive priority consideration.

Qualifications: Prior experience as a Writing Consultant required; experience in the Writing Center at Syracuse University is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities: Consultants will help students one-to-one in the WC and online, visit classrooms, and develop workshops; some afternoon/evening/weekend hours required. Responsibilities include assisting students to:

  1. Interpret an assignment sheet, talk through ideas for a project, discuss course readings, or plan for a paper.
  2. (Re)consider choices with regard to audience, focus, reasoning, or organization.
  3. Develop ideas with greater specificity.
  4. Acquire research strategies, integrate scholarly sources, and apply proper documentation.
  5. Improve editing and proofreading skills, expand vocabulary, and better understand technical conventions of academic writing.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Build a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
  • Keep current with developments and trends in the Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition curriculum and in the field of rhetoric and composition.
