About the Brand

Scientific American, the oldest continuously published magazine in the U.S., reaches millions of people each month through its print magazine, app, social media, and on ScientificAmerican.com.

About the Role

The Scientific American Editor in Chief leads the editorial teams responsible for producing the flagship magazine, scientificamerican.com, and other branded products. The role is responsible for developing an editorial vision and strategy and managing day-to-day content creation that engages our existing audiences, grows brand visibility, and supports audience growth and revenue.

Role Responsibilities:

1. Set content vision and strategy that responds to business opportunities and emerging media trends, user data, and market conditions.
2. Oversee daily content and monthly magazine production, ensuring it meets quality standards, is timely, and relevant to the audience.
3. Set tone for content overall and work with team members to deliver that tone consistently across multiple media platforms.
4. Maintain the brand values and integrity of Scientific American by establishing and upholding editorial policies and guidelines.
5. Collaborate with peers to set strategies that support brand monetization including consumer subscriptions, advertising sponsorships, events, and other initiatives.
6. Plan and supervise strategic editorial projects, such as special reports and single-topic issues, on all content platforms (Print, Online, Audio, Video).
7. Contribute to the growth of Scientific American, including developing and launching new content, products, and brand-related services that meet audience needs.
8. Build and maintain connections and visibility within the relevant academic and commercial spaces to support business growth.
9. Oversee editorial budgets and ongoing efforts to improve efficiency.
10. Collaborate with international editions, including participating in the development of large collaborative projects.
11. Represent Scientific American and Springer Nature, as needed, with an eye to creating other synergies for other parts of the company.
12. Mentor and nurture the newsroom, fostering a culture of creativity, innovation, and growth.
13. Collaborate on audience development and growth strategies, working closely with marketing, engagement, and product teams to track progress and optimize results.

• Peers - Publisher, VP Product & Technology, VP Ancillary Revenue, Director Marketing, Managing Director Spektrum.de
• SN matrixed partners across research publishing, Legal, HR, Finance

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

• BA/BS required. Advanced degree preferred.
• Extensive experience as a journalist with a preferred focus on science journalism.
• Experience managing a large team.
• Demonstrated success developing new products, working with data, and cross-functional teams.
• Experience producing multi-platform products (print, digital, video, podcasts).
• Knowledge of and deep connections in the world of science.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $195,000 - $235,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity.
