Description

The Part-time Library Assistant shall report to the Director of library Services. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintains the circulation area in an organized and efficient manner; circulates library materials utilizing an automated system (ILS); maintains patron database; provides reserve service and directional information; refers library users to the appropriate reference area; sorts and shelves library materials and shifts library collections; creates new book displays; identifies materials that require repair/maintenance.
  • Provides customer service to College students, faculty, staff, and local patrons; assigns and leads the daily work activities of student workers assigned to circulation.
  • Coordinates the processing of hold and recall requests and notifies library users of availability; resolves overdue recall issues following established guidelines; collects, records, and tabulates fines and fees; may assist with cataloging duties; interprets and enforces library and college policy and procedures; interacts appropriately with library patrons and refers problems and in-depth reference inquires to a higher level of supervision.
  • Monitors and tracks Estacado Library Information Network (ELIN) consortium loans; sends and receives items; responds to consortium loan requests.
  • Schedules library study room reservation requests; maintain electronic room scheduling system.
  • Assists with an annual inventory of the print book collection; assists with coordination of library displays; maintains/processes circulation quarterly reports as needed; maintains knowledge of, and is cross-trained in all library support staff and reference functions.
  • Generates standard reports on overdue materials, collection maintenance, statistics, and fine money management.
  • Tracks missing issues of periodicals; prepares items for access/display.
  • Generates general library and office supply orders.
  • Serves as a building coordinator for the library, and submits maintenance work orders as required.
  • May serve on various campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Some experience in a library setting preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of college policies and procedures affecting assigned work.
• Knowledge of general library procedures/policies and integrated library system (ILS) functions.
• Knowledge of procedures of various interlibrary loan networks, copyright guidelines and location, and verification tools sufficient to coordinate interlibrary loan activity.
• Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment.
• Knowledge of proper public contact and telephone, email etiquette.
• Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping.
• Skill in dealing with the public, and utilizing appropriate customer service techniques.
• Skill in both verbal and written communication.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.
• Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and multi-task with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
• Ability to operate various types of office machines such as personal computers, photocopying machines, microfilm/microfiche readers sufficient to locate catalog information.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information.
• Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule in order to cover the operating hours of the library.
• Ability to train and assign student workers, and advise professional library staff sufficient to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.
• Position may require the ability to safely move up to 50 pounds.

Additional Information

This is a Part-time position.

Up to, but not to exceed 29 hours per week.

Fall/Spring Semesters

Monday - Thursday: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Saturday: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Summer Semester

Up to 29 hours per week between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
