Position Summary

Portland Community Colleges Art, Humanities, Communication and Design (AHCD) Academic and Career Pathway seeks a full-time Instructional Support Technician II (IST II) in Art. This position will support the Art Program at the Sylvania Campus.

The ART IST II position may support any of the following Art areas: Sculpture and Printmaking with secondary support for Art Gallery, Painting, Drawing

The Pathway welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions. The IST works directly with students and with faculty, administrative staff, casual staff, student workers and Pathway leadership to enhance our students learning experience by ensuring classes and facilities are well supported at the Sylvania campus. They liaise with a variety of stakeholders to perform a full range of support duties. ISTs work independently, responding to a variety of situations. Successful ISTs have the ability to make sound decisions regarding whether they are able to provide appropriate support or seek assistance from faculty, the Faculty Department Chair, administrative assistant or the Arts and Design Program Dean. The scope of this may include providing ongoing studio support, supporting student success in the studios, onboarding casual studio workers, and developing studio schedules.

Nature and Scope of Work

Supports studio art classes under the technical direction of one or more members of the faculty or an instructional administrator, prepares multiple art studios and/or classrooms following specified instructions. Assists with the equipment, modules, and projects that will be used in the studios or classrooms to assist the instructor in the delivery of desired instructional outcomes. Work is performed relatively independently, subject to supervisory review and direction. The IST II may provide work direction to work-study, student helpers, and casual employees and coordinate their activities.


Typical Duties and Responsibilities (includes some or all of the following)

1.Foster and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment within the studio art facilities, ensuring a positive experience for students, faculty, and staff.

2.Promote and enforce safety protocols, providing guidance on best practices and procedures for the safe use of studio art facilities during open studio hours.

3.Oversee student use of studio equipment, offering one-on-one technical assistance to complement coursework and address individual project needs.

4.Maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for materials used within the studio, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

5.Collaborate with faculty to assemble, maintain, and manage equipment used in classrooms and art studios, ensuring it is in good working condition and safe to use.

6.Provide general assistance to students, faculty, and staff, orienting them to safety protocols, proper use of studio equipment, materials, power tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

7.Troubleshoot and diagnose art equipment issues, ensuring studios are set up for safe and organized use.

8.Coordinate the daily operations of the art studios, establishing and implementing safe procedures for the use of equipment, supplies, materials, and machinery.

9.Oversee and direct student workers, work-study students, and casual staff, ensuring appropriate work schedules and coverage. Includes assistance with the processing of related timesheets as needed.

10. Orient new faculty and staff to studio policies and procedures, train them on safe equipment use and maintenance, and monitor their performance, reporting issues to the administrative supervisor or faculty.

11. Monitor and track departmental supplies, equipment, instructional materials ensuring compliance with college purchasing guidelines, maintaining accurate inventories, monitoring expenditures, and coordinating repairs and vendor interactions as needed.

12. Safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) protocols.

13. Ensure the general cleanliness, security, and safety of studio spaces, reporting any maintenance or safety issues as they arise.

14. Help install and/or deinstall gallery exhibitions and prep the gallery for future shows as other responsibilities allow.

15. Perform additional duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the studio art facilities.

Candidate ProfileThese qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.

  • Experience in studio arts and art facility maintenance including woodshop, welding, fabrication, and printmaking.
  • Experience working with power tools (e.g., drills, saws), welding, and printmaking equipment.
  • Knowledge of art studio media and safety practices (oily rags, what can/can't go down the sink drain, proper disposal of hazardous materials etc.)
  • Proficient with maintenance and minor repairs to studio art equipment such as easels, drawing horses, work tables, wood shop power tools, lighting equipment etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in maintaining art facilities and providing effective support to students with their projects.
  • Experience and knowledge of handling and installation of artwork.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours if needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to diverse audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in sculpture and/or printmaking appropriate to instructional support.
  • Two years of experience supporting studio art activities in sculpture and/or printmaking are required; relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must possess technical expertise in woodworking, metalworking, and both intaglio and relief printmaking techniques. Includes a solid understanding of safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, as well as the maintenance and repair of related equipment.
  • The candidate must have the ability to lead and demonstrate effective communication skills to guide and assist students in comprehending the assigned tasks they are required to complete.

Position Grade16Starting Salary ExpectationsThe first two steps of the range are: $47,034 to $48,440 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsWork pressure, disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills. Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise, and temperature extremes. Some learned physical skills are required. Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of materials or equipment (up to 50 lbs); occasional periods of sustained effort.
