Seasonal Position/Production: May-August
As Music Director for Vienna Youth Players (VYP), the music director would teach the vocals for a musical theatre production every summer for teens ages 10-18. The music director is responsible for training students on vocal technique, interpreting and implementing stylistic choices, playing the piano during vocal rehearsals, and teaching them the vocal arrangements to sing alongside a recording track. The music director will collaborate with the other staff and students to turn the director's vision of the production into a reality. The music director works under the supervision of the Director of Vienna Youth Players.
Work Hours: The Music Director will be expected to attend:
-Auditions
-4 rehearsals per week during weeks 1-7 of the program
-2 rehearsals during week 8
-2 of 5 Shows
The Music Director will also be expected to spend about 16 hours toward planning and meetings throughout the production. The Director may adjust the division of the hours. The Music Director may request an adjusted schedule.
The hours listed below are for rehearsals. The director is responsible for scheduling tech days and planning outside of these rehearsal times. The director may also add additional rehearsal times outside of these hours. Annual work start and end dates will be determined by the director in coordination with the Recreation Program Coordinator II Events.
7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, June and July
2025 Production Dates: July 19, 20, 25, 26, 27
All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of drug and TB tests.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Ultimately it is the director's responsibility to complete tasks needed to produce the show so additional tasks may be required.
Essential Functions:
Audition
Minimum Training and Experience
3-5 years of experience in musical theater education, vocal direction, or comparable discipline.
Preferred: bachelor's degree in music, theater, or related field.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must hold or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications. The Town of Vienna will provide training opportunities if needed.

- Attend auditions and assess those who have auditioned.
- Choose and teach vocal pieces during callbacks.
- Collaborate with the Director and Choreographer to form a cast list.
- Scheduling music rehearsals in collaboration with the stage manager and director.
- Tracking what songs have been taught and what songs remain to be taught.
- Tracking students' training and knowledge of songs and which students still need time to learn.
- Learn and interpret the vocal arrangements for the production.
- Play the piano during vocal rehearsals.
- Create artistic choices in how songs will be performed.
- Teach the vocal arrangements of the production to all of the students who sing in the show.
- Lead warm-ups at the start of each rehearsal and performance the Music Director is scheduled to attend.
- Teach students in the cast or crew to lead warm-ups on days the Music Director is not scheduled to attend.
- Teach proper singing technique to ensure safe and effective habits.
- Share or create rehearsal tracks for students to use at home.
- Offer constructive feedback to help students develop their vocal performance skills.
- Collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, Choreographer and Stage Manager to organize a rehearsal schedule, keeping in mind the absences of everyone involved in the production.
- Build inclusive opportunities for students to connect and form authentic friendships with one another.
- Create a space where students can take risks comfortably, make artistic choices, and push the limits they thought they had.
- Mentor students through emotional challenges.
- Monitor and do what you can to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the production.
- Help setup and pack up each rehearsal.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to give, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
- Knowledge of first aid practices and techniques.
