In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, growing and scaling a best-in-class design system to ensure efficiency and accessibility across our product ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and designers, to deliver solutions that delight our users.

At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships and collaboration it builds and the creativity it brings to the table. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our Datadogs can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.

What You’ll Do:

    • Balance listening and influence, demonstrating the credibility and humility needed to lead seasoned team members with deep institutional knowledge.
    • Create opportunities for junior team members to develop their skills.
    • Cultivate an inclusive team culture that values curiosity, straight-shootin’, and fun.
    • Provide thoughtful design and technical feedback that elevates the quality of work across the team.
    • Bring a thoughtful approach to simplifying processes.
  2. Drive Design System excellence:
    • Lead the scaling and maintenance of a large, multi-product design system, ensuring that it is accessible, adaptable, and appropriately robust.
    • Balance what’s technically feasible with what’s best for the user and the business, re-enforcing a culture where every design decision centers on user needs.
    • Serve as an advocate for the design system team, positioning them as trusted partners and go-to resources for usability best practices.
  3. Communicate across the organization:
    • Act as a bridge between design and engineering, fostering collaboration and ensuring design components are accurately implemented.
    • Evangelize the strategic value of design systems work to stakeholders across the company, ensuring alignment with business goals.
  4. Become an expert, stay an expert:
    • Become a Datadog expert, mentoring designers on the team to do their best work. Use product managers, engineers, and the greater design org to understand how our customers use Datadog and what they need to succeed.
    • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, proactively identifying opportunities to enhance the design system and related processes.

Who You Are:

  • Experience: Minimum of 8 years in digital product design, with at least 3 years in a leadership role focused on design systems. You have experience developing and scaling design systems, with a deep understanding of component-based design patterns and design tokens. You approach challenges holistically, from platform-level systems to the finer details of individual components.
  • Positive Energy: You bring an upbeat and motivating presence to the team, helping create a collaborative, supportive atmosphere that drives collective success.
  • Technical Proficiency: Your portfolio includes a proven track record of shipping interaction design work in web applications. You have a strong understanding of design tools such as Figma or Sketch, as well as familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and mentor a team, fostering a positive and productive work environment. You give and receive feedback well, supporting and improving the work of your colleagues as well as your own.
  • Communication: Excellent visual and written communication abilities, with a talent for articulating design decisions and strategies to diverse audiences.
  • Collaboration: Experience working in cross-functional teams, with a track record of building effective partnerships with product managers and engineers.
