Substitute Library Assistant

Hours Per Day: 7.5 hours per day
Salary: $11.35 per hour

Position Purpose:

In the absence of the Library Assistant, operates the library media center and creates a functional inviting atmosphere for student learning, and assists with daily building technology operations.

Essential Job Functions:

In the absence of the Librarian Assistant, perform the following tasks:

  • Maintains the operation of the circulation desk (e.g., checking out/receiving materials, processing overdue returns, etc.)
  • Provides support to enhance staff and student access to resource materials and equipment.
  • Keeps materials properly organized.
  • Assists building staff members with technology issues (printer maintenance, classroom PCs, labs, interactive whiteboard technology, technology integration, web page development, etc.) as time permits.
  • Assists staff and students with scheduling and using materials and equipment.
  • Collects and reserves material for classroom assignments.
  • Prepares bulletin boards, displays, and/or material lists to introduce new library/media resources to students and staff.
  • Communicates high expectations and shows an active interest in student progress.
  • Helps supervise volunteer helpers.
  • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
  • Supports an inclusive educational environment.
  • Communicates with the public library staff members.
  • Takes precautions to ensure student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised.
  • Accepts responsibility for personal decisions and conduct. Strives to develop rapport and serve as a positive role model for others.
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
  • Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code.
  • Promotes a favorable image of the school district.
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Potential for interactions with disruptive, unruly and/or menacing individuals.
  • Duties may require prolonged use of a computer keyboard and monitor.
  • Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.
Qualifications Profile:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Educational Aide Permit issued by the Ohio Department of Education
