The Patients’ Library is seeking a librarian who will assist in managing daily library procedures including circulation, reference, supervision and staffing in patient centered hospital libraries. Reporting to the director of Children’s and Patients’ Libraries, the Librarian is also responsible for inventory, ordering, purchasing functions, training and supervising students and volunteers, and for assessing current library services and researching and recommending service improvements. The librarian provides leadership and day to day operations in the libraries in consultation with the Library Director and working closely with departments throughout UIHC to provide excellence in services and exceed patient and family expectations.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Utilize selection tools and patron requests to select, acquire, catalogue and process materials for patron use
  • Maintain catalogue records, reports, and data
  • Provide information and circulation services at the public desk or in-person and by telephone, email, or other forms of communication
  • Answer requests for consumer health and patient education content as requested
  • Assist staff in utilizing medical resources in-person, on-line and referral to appropriate sources such as Nursing Education and Hardin Library for the Health Sciences as needed
  • Consult with the office of Patient Education or Hardin Library for the Health Sciences as needed to utilize recommended resources for requests
  • Respond to patron requests by accessing materials in the libraries or in scholarly journal articles from PubMed and other sources that support sustainable scholarly communications
  • Learn from the profession of library science through local, state, and national library meetings when possible
  • Contribute to the field of library science on issues relevant to patient and hospital libraries
  • Welcome patients, families, staff and volunteers to the library
  • Respond to patient and family needs to support inclusion in the hospital care process
  • Provide demand-oriented library services
  • Participate in recruitment and training of student staff and volunteers
  • Supervise student staff and volunteers as needed in provision of library services

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting with consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer software applications

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing various library databases
  • Experience and comfort working with resources in a variety of mediums such as audio, digital, and hardcopies
  • Ability to be organized, flexible, and multi-task in a high volume and fast-paced environment
