At the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, our mission is to advance the University of Iowa through engagement and philanthropy. The Iowa Magazine Student Clerk supports our Communications team by assisting with editorial tasks and magazine production for Iowa Magazine, the University of Iowa’s flagship publication for alumni and friends.
Primary Tasks
- Write briefs, news stories, and profiles for the Iowa Newsletter and Iowa Magazine (in print and online)
- Compile class notes, letters, and “In Memory” sections for publication
- Brainstorm and pitch story ideas for potential publication
- Track and organize photos and related assets
- Support coding and distribution tasks related to the magazine
- Assist with additional editorial and writing projects as needed
Core Responsibilities
As the Iowa Magazine Student Clerk, you will gain valuable experience in journalism, storytelling, and magazine production while collaborating with a creative team to produce compelling content for a wide audience.
- Write and edit short-form articles and content for print and digital use
- Assist with compiling and formatting recurring magazine sections
- Provide input and ideas for editorial content planning
- Help manage visuals and photography used in the publication
- Learn and contribute to the content production process
- Attend team meetings and professional development sessions as available
- Grow your skills in editing, content planning, and publication processes
This position offers hands-on experience in magazine production, communications strategy, and editorial collaboration. You will also develop your writing portfolio and gain exposure to publishing tools and workflows.
The clerk is expected to work 10–20 hours per week during the summer and can continue until graduation. Flexible scheduling is available between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Qualifications
- Must be a current University of Iowa student (minimum 12 credit hours during fall/spring semesters)
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to accept and incorporate editorial feedback
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Interest in journalism, writing, or publishing is a plus
