Description
Basic Purpose: Primary purpose is to provide reference assistance and information literacy instruction both in person and online. Also maintains the Library’s collection of government documents, provides support for electronic resources, and supports copy cataloging for new materials in the current library system. Work on campus outreach.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities: Renders reference and research assistance, using both print and electronic resources. Collaborates with the Library Director in the development and maintenance of the Reference collection. Assist with assessment and web services maintenance. Checks in and processes all depository acquisitions. Organizes and maintains the Government Documents collection. Serves as the primary campus resource for bibliographic instruction and in developing web-based guides using LibGuides to assist patrons in the use of Library resources. Maintains links and other content on the Library’s web site. Staffs the circulation desk and performs circulation functions, as needed. Prepares and submits reports to the Library Director on the activities of the Reference and Government Documents Departments. Performs other duties, as assigned by the Library Director.
The reference librarian is also expected to provide virtual reference services to members of the Thomas More community through formats such as a live chat service. In addition to the one-on-one instruction of in-person and virtual reference assistance, the individual will be expected to collaborate with faculty on providing instructional sessions about library use, navigating databases, and research methods in courses.
Ongoing other projects include selecting and ordering new items; support weeding of the Library collection and facilitating the Library’s acquisition of digital resources, analyzing statistics on library usage, supporting the institution in increasing the use of digital materials in the classroom by supporting faculty in creating OER texts, and building relationships with community members.
Education and Specialized and/or Technical Knowledge Requirements: An MLS from an ALA-accredited program; experience in reference, bibliographic instruction and database searching; and a working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
