Compensation:
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $65,000 and $68,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
Position overview
The Reference & Instruction Librarian for Arts and Humanities serves as liaison to Arts and Humanities departments. The individual in this position helps carry out the mission of the Reference & Instruction department to support the teaching and learning goals of the college. We emphasize excellent service to students, faculty, and staff; assistance and support for student research; active participation in campus initiatives; and involvement in the campus intellectual life. As a member of this department, the Reference and Instruction Librarian will provide information literacy instruction at the Research/IT desk, in appointments, and during classroom sessions in a manner that supports the curriculum and mission of the college. The Reference and Instruction Librarian for Arts and Humanities reports to the Head of Reference and Instruction.
Carleton College Library is a member of Bridge, a collaborative consortium with the St. Olaf College Libraries. As a member of the Bridge Consortium, the Reference & Instruction Librarian works collaboratively with peers at the St. Olaf Libraries to provide strategic direction and services for the research needs at Carleton and St. Olaf.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
Reference and Instruction Services (80%)
Maintain and continuously develop subject expertise in order to provide excellent reference services to faculty, students, and staff
Stay informed about emerging digital tools and technologies in the arts and humanities, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), and report on relevant tools to Library staff
Collaborate on Digital Arts & Humanities projects on campus
Actively engage and provide outreach to faculty to identify and meet students’ information literacy needs by providing information literacy instruction and student research consultations
Participate in general reference responsibilities in person, on the phone, through email, chat, and video chat at the Research/IT help desk.
Create and maintain course, subject, and general online research guides
Develop and maintain a reference collection that meets the research needs of the students, regardless of publication format
In collaboration with other library departments, help to build media collections in ways that support teaching and learning
Collaborate with colleagues in Reference & Instruction on assessment projects to improve the instruction and research support offered by the department
Collaborate with other academic units on campus, including the Academic Support Center and Academic Technology, to provide curricular and research support for faculty and students
Collaborate with library colleagues to mentor and supervise Library Interns
As part of the College and Gould Library’s Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (IDE) efforts, commit to building a strong and inclusive community among students, faculty, and staff, by respecting and making space for diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view
Serve on various library, Bridge, and campus committees as needed
Other duties as assigned
Copyright & Open Education (20%)
Serve as a member of the Campus Copyright Committee, as the streaming media representative
Educate faculty, staff, and students about campus-wide resource management and access tools, such as Leganto (Library Link) and LibKey
Collaborate with relevant groups in the library, including Collections Strategy & Development Librarian, the Digital Collections Advisory Team, Bridge Electronic Resources Librarian, and Bridge Open Education Resource Team.
Educate and support members of the campus community on issues related to scholarly communication, such as copyright, open access, open education, and fair use.
Help community members identify, adopt, and/or assess open and affordable course content.
Work collaboratively to guide community members through the process of creating Open Educational Resources (OERs)
Maintain current knowledge of issues in open education, open textbooks, open access, and copyright.
Education/Experience/Skills:
Required:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or currently enrolled in an ALA accredited Library program
Experience teaching research tools and information literacy
Demonstrated understanding of issues and trends in reference services and information literacy
Demonstrated understanding of issues around copyright and open education
Experience providing reference services
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in the Humanities or Arts
Academic library experience
Familiarity with electronic bibliographic management systems such as Zotero
Experience working in collaboration with faculty to deliver information literacy instruction
Familiarity with copyright issues around audio and music
Familiarity with the administration of content management systems
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
