Overview
MinnPost, a nonprofit organization dedicated to in-depth coverage of Minnesota news and culture, is hiring its next Greater Minnesota reporter.
We’re looking for a reporter who will illuminate and explain complex issues in creative ways that will engage audiences across the state and especially outside the seven-county Twin Cities metro area. We want this person’s reporting to help readers statewide understand the diversity of experiences that exist across our state’s nearly 87,000 square miles. Through great reporting and audience engagement, we hope this reporter’s work will influence existing public discourse and spark new conversations about how to make the policies and systems that affect people work better.
We’re looking for someone who is both a self-starter and a great collaborator, a reporter who can pivot quickly to address audience needs, who can go beyond the daily headlines and explain what the news means and who it will affect. By adding context, new voices and perspectives and by uncovering trends and key developments, this reporter will improve Minnesotans’ understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Greater Minnesota and equip them to make better decisions and engage in policy-making. Through republication partnerships, outside appearances on other media platforms and occasional MinnPost events, this writer’s work will help grow MinnPost’s reach and impact. Recent audience research identified Greater Minnesota as an area of strategic growth for MinnPost, and we’re committed to exploring new ways to reach and serve audiences.
MinnPost is an outlet where people can escape the noisy political rhetoric and find facts, explanatory journalism and data-driven stories that help them make sense of what they’re seeing and hearing. With a new president and Congress in place, how are policy changes at the federal level playing out in rural communities or in farm country? And how might legislation being discussed at the State Capitol affect those in Greater Minnesota?
Stories on the beat could touch on everything from the environment to health to economic development to higher education. There’s a lot of potential, and we’re interested in hearing the incoming reporter’s ideas about how to approach the beat to best serve our readers.
Relevant skills:
- Outstanding writing and reporting skills
- 3+ years of journalism experience preferred, with at least some experience covering a beat
- Ability to multitask and work on deadline, turning stories quickly to maximize reach and impact
- Data literacy, especially with government data and documents
- Self-starting, proactive attitude and a track record of collaborating with colleagues
- An interest in community engagement and willingness to participate in occasional MinnPost events
- Willingness to regularly travel to other parts of the state for in-person reporting
There are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who might hold important skills we haven’t listed. Don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We strongly encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities.
This is a union position with a minimum salary of $64,890 OR $70,040, depending on experience and qualifications. In order to qualify for a minimum salary of $70,040, a candidate must have eight or more years of full-time equivalent professional reporting experience.
