We are currently seeking a full-time on-site Senior Library Assistant in our Library. This position provides and leads front line customer service in a timely, accurate, and effective manner to PFW students, faculty, and staff, and residents of Indiana. The pay for this position is $15/hr.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Leads front line service in a timely, accurate, and effective manner to PFW students, faculty, and staff, and residents of Indiana.
- Demonstrates a courteous, professional attitude to all patrons and invites approach by initiating contact with patrons through library communication channels, and providing circulation assistance.
- Oversees ingoing and outgoing materials requested through the Purdue fulfillment network.
- Assists Service Desk Assistant Director with the intake, processing, and removal of course reserves in the library. Leads opening and closing procedures.
- Answers the Library and Writing Center phones, providing information, scheduling, directional assistance and referrals within the library and other campus departments.
- Instructs patrons in use of microform reader/printers, photocopiers, computers, printers, and other equipment, and troubleshoots mechanical problems.
- Alerts library IT staff to errors and outages in electronic resources, technology, and library systems.
- Responsible for the physical movement of materials in the building, such as shifting materials.
- Participates in review of student employee work for accuracy.
Primary Responsibilities Continued:
- Applies and communicates policy to internal and external patrons.
- Handles patron complaints and concerns, and implements and interprets existing policy and procedures.
- Provides functional supervision of student employees through training, deployment to specific service points, review of activities for accuracy and correctness, and allocation of tasks.
- Also includes evening supervision of the students and building in general when working closing shifts.
- Answers directional and mid-level reference questions.
- Maintains an ongoing working knowledge of effective search strategies and of basic resources available in the library, and updates that knowledge through consistent self-study and/or formal training.
- Assists and educates library users in the initial selection and basic use of appropriate information resources, and encourages users to return for further help if their information needs are not satisfied.
- Refers reference questions when appropriate and alerts librarians to unusual or difficult reference questions originating from course assignments.
- Performs special library projects and support, as assigned and based upon skill level, workload, and schedule.
Required Qualifications:
- High level of customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including communicating technical information to non-technical people.
- Ability to interpret information, analyze, and solve problems.
- Utilize time management skills to meet project deadlines and arrive on time, as scheduled for shifts.
- Perform basic and routine bibliographical searches using diverse computer systems and networks.
- Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.
- Able to self-motivate and quickly adapt to a changing environment, and to find solutions in a complex situation.
- Flexibility of work schedule dictated by the university academic calendar and university holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- College course work; Library Science or Library and Information Science.
- Certificate or Degree; Library Science or Library and Information Science.
- Experience working in an academic library, or, employment in an academic setting.
- Library circulation and/or reference experience, highly encouraged.
- Familiarity with and knowledge of library databases.
- Experience with library management systems (ILLiad, OCLC, Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo).
