The City of Fall River, Library Board of Trustees has two (2) vacancies.
LIBRARY ASSISTANT I
Date: January 14, 2025
Salary: $1,655.24 (Step 1) to $1,782.99 (Step 6) bi-weekly
Work Schedule: 35 Hours Per Week
Children’s Section: Monday – Thursday 12:30 pm to 8 pm
Alternating Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4:30 pm
Reference Floater: Monday & Tuesday 12:30 pm to 8 pm
Wednesday & Thursday 8 am to 3:30 pm
Alternating Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4:30 pm
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of a Section Head I as delegated by the authority of the Library Board and in concert with the executive direction of the Mayor to the City Administrator to the Administrator of Public Library Services, to an Assistant Administrator to perform a variety of highly complex clerical functions pertaining to library work; to perform related duties as required. The employee has access to confidential patron records.
The inability to perform the requirements of the position could result in delay of service, monetary loss or expenditure of time by other employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work involves providing efficient service to the people of the City for a variety of highly complex clerical functions pertaining to library work; to be responsible for conformance to city and state codes and standards of all work performed under his/her direction and to conform to policies and directives promulgated by the Administrator of Library Services; to coordinate the work for which s/he is responsible with the work of coworkers; work is subject to periodic review by the Head Librarian of the section to which s/he is assigned; this work is performed with considerable latitude in independent judgment and decision-making and under general supervision; performs related work as assigned by the Administrator or Public Library Services.
Library Assistant I
In addition to the duties included in the job descriptions for Library Assistant II, performs the following additional professional/technical functions:
- May assist in assessing library operation and service patterns and recommending options for change to a Section Head I or Assistant Administrator as appropriate.
- May assist in the responsible for systematic review of operations and assisting in strategic planning and development for a particular library section.
- Supervises personnel, including pages, in absence of Section Head of a section.
- Works with and trains library volunteers.
- May conduct public programming for children and/or adults.
- Performs basic cataloging and classification functions in an automated setting and as defined by library and network policy.
- May verify and prepare orders for acquisition of library materials.
- Recommends books for rebinding; and performs simple repairs to damaged books.
- Accepts patron requests for interlibrary/intranetwork loan and reports to patrons on status of such loans.
May also engage in the following:
- Conduct in-depth patron reference interview.
- Uses library collection including periodicals, reference and nonfiction collection to answer patron inquiries.
- Provides reader advisor functions, i.e. recommends books and other materials to patrons.
- Books museum passes.
- Instructs patrons in the use of the automated catalog and in the location of library materials; assists with finding and retrieving same.
- Operates library equipment used in public programming.
- Verifies bibliographic information for patrons or for interlibrary/intranetwork loan purposes.
- Answers ready-reference and complex reference questions.
- Performs general clerical functions pertaining to registration, overdues, mailings, orders, interlibrary/intranetwork loan forms, periodicals, etc.
- Maintains departmental files.
- Prepares displays.
- Compiles statistics pertaining to departmental functions.
- Performs a variety of tasks pertaining to patron service such as issuing registrations, performing circulation activities, retrieving books etc.
- Answers telephone and responds to general questions regarding library services.
- Refers telephone requests to appropriate departments.
- Refers complaints from general public to Section Head; or handles complaints in the absence of Section Head.
- Shelves books and maintains general order of library materials.
- Instructs patrons in use of library equipment such as copy machine, electronic devices, and basic computer technology.
- Maintains supplies, reports malfunctions to supervisors; and troubleshoots basic computer problems and other technology problems.
- Distributes departmental mail.
- Is responsible for the physical processing of library material for circulation and use including covering books, producing labels, barcoding etc.
- May assist with individuals and community groups, including outreach visits, to provide special services and encourage and promote use in library services.
- Is responsible for reporting maintenance items to Section Head.
- Ability to cover in different departments and/or branches as needed.
- Required to attend off-site meetings and training.
- Performs all opening/closing procedures.
- Performs related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and supervisors and the general public; ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with other city employees; a positive “can-do” attitude; willingness to work overtime hours as required; ability to observe necessary safety precautions; potential for training in data-processing entry skills; ability to perform routine clerical functions under direct supervision with latitude in independent judgment; must be familiar with the use of automation for basic circulation, cataloging, and reference functions, must be familiar with alphabetizing and indexing; must be familiar with library operations and material; ability to operate audio-visual equipment, work with computers, and other equipment associated with library functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Must also have one year of library experience. Familiarity with automation of public library operations preferred. The Administrator of Public Library Services in recommending employment to the appointing authority reserves the right to consider other qualifications and abilities of applicants for this position and to waive any requirements as long as such waiver is in the best interest of the City of Fall River.
