Job Description
The Salt Lake Tribune is seeking a Director of Advertising to help expand its groundbreaking nonprofit news model to communities across Utah. Since its founding in 1871, The Tribune has served as Utah’s independent voice for news and information. In 2019, we were the first legacy news organization in the United States to become a nonprofit and we are helping lead a movement to build sustainable business models for local news. In 2025 we will build on prior expansion in Moab by launching new offerings in St. George and Cache Valley.
The Director of Advertising will join, and help lead, a three-person sales team at The Tribune. This a strategic role in addition to a sales role. The Director will work with the Chief Development Officer to help build the strategic vision to move The Tribune from relying on traditional ad products and into a more diversified and innovative advertising model. They will work closely with the CDO to define The Tribune’s portfolio of offerings, rates, and policies with a focus on digital and experiential products. They will oversee an initiative to relaunch branded content at The Tribune and find ways to better monetize The Tribune’s growth in newsletters and across social. They will work closely with the analytics and product team to better monetize onsite audiences while vastly improving the ad experience for the user. With the CDO, they will be responsible for the division achieving monthly and annual revenue goals. They will also build and manage their own client list and have their own monthly and quarterly revenue targets.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, highly organized, and have a passion for the business of news. We have an opportunity to rethink what advertising means for today’s local media and in doing so ensure The Tribune is set up to serve Utahns for another 150 years. They will be comfortable pitching, writing, and conceptualizing campaigns. They will follow and understand the latest in both digital media trends and advertising trends.
This role reports into the Chief Development Officer. It will also have direct reports. This role will have revenue goals associated with it. Compensation will include a commission plan.
Requirements:
Responsibilities include:
Advertising strategy
- Working with the Chief Development Officer to define the product slate and associated rates;
- Overseeing the creation and updating of the media kit and pitch templates;
- Working with product on implementation of ad product onsite;
Sales & Client Management
- Achieving monthly sales targets;
- Maintaining a client list, with a focus on Wasatch Front clients;
- Overseeing execution of all programs and client relationships for programs the Director sales.
Division management
- Assisting Chief Development Officer in distributing clients amongst other account executives;
- Managing the Advertising Coordinator;
- Assisting CDO on division management including ensuring processes are efficient and in line with trends in the industry.
Qualifications:Candidates should have excellent organizational skills demonstrated in meeting deadlines, setting priorities and maintaining accuracy in the details. They should be comfortable working in a cooperative but self-directed manner and in a dynamic and evolving industry. They should have a thorough understanding of the work The Tribune does and an interest in, and passion for, media. Additionally, they should have:
- Minimum of five years in a sales role;
- Understanding of digital advertising and media buying (either from a client, agency, or media perspective)
- Proficiency with Newspaper Manager, or a comparable database;
- Strong writing skills with a focus on marketing and sales communications;
- Mastery of Excel, Google applications, and related softwares;
- Experience in deck creation;
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
- Be comfortable attending events and public speaking
